Flaming Gorge questions

I am going to the Gorge for the first time. I was wondering if I could get some advice form some of the pros. I have never fished the Gorge and was wondering if you could help. I have read all the posts this year and still have questions.

  1. Where are the burbot?
  2. How deep of water are they in?
  3. What is the best bait?
  4. What is the best time of night to fish for them?
  5. Where can we buy the wyoming stamps for six poles and to fish these waters with Utah Licenses?
  6. Where are the macs?
  7. How deep of water are they in?
  8. What is the best bait?
  9. What is the best time of day to fish for them?

I know it is alot of questions to ask, I have a GPS, fish finder, tent, power auger, contour map of FG, and all the works. I just need some advice from the pros… Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

any help?

:sunglasses:Sorry. Most of the stuff you are asking HAS been included to some extent in past posts. You are asking for a book on Da Gorge. A lot of writing, so I am not surprised nobody has jumped in. Maybe somebody started when you first posted but still hasn’t finished their reply yet.

Some of the questions you ask have no definitive answers. Where are the fish and how do you catch them? Some guys have been working on those questions for years and still can’t always catch them. The locations, depths, lures and presentations change constantly. It takes a lot of on the water experience to develop a personal mental database that will at least suggest a place to start on every trip.

For example…burbot. In December and early January they were over shallow rocks…feeding on crawdads and getting ready to spawn. Once they spawned they have moved out into deeper water and scattered. Nobody could tell you where you might find some on any given day/night.

**Spend more time on the archives and do some search engine stuff. There are many writeups on other forums and on Wyoming fishing sites. **

I might also suggest that you PM some of the guys who seem to fish the Gorge the most and post the best reports. Most of them will reply to specific questions, to someone who is sincere and credible. But, you can’t blame them for not posting all of their A material on a public forum.

wyo side any small rocky bay. 15 to 30 ft. the closer to the green river the beter. glow twister tails with chub meat right off the bottom dead sticked. but it think the burbot are winding down now.

Thanks for the advice. I have read all the past posts on FG, and sent PMs, i’m just trying to get more info before I drive all that way. After all, I live to fish.:sunglasses:

I’m not a “pro” but I don’t mind offering some direction.

1. Where are the burbot? Rocky points, slopes, and shelves. The further north you are the more abundant they are.
2. How deep of water are they in? Lately, I’ve done better around 30ft, but also look from 10-50ft.
3. What is the best bait? Glow tubes and curly-tail jigs (2-3inches) on a 1/4-3/8oz jighead. Tip with sucker meat.
4. What is the best time of night to fish for them? Evening, 6-9pm.
5. Where can we buy the wyoming stamps for six poles and to fish these waters with Utah Licenses? A few locations include Jubilee in Evanston, Chevron in Manila, WYG&F office in Green River.
6. Where are the macs? Reservoir-wide hanging along main channel points, humps and breaks.
7. How deep of water are they in? Depends, 40-100ft.
8. What is the best bait? Tube jigs, bucktails, jigging spoons, etc. tipped with sucker meat.
9. What is the best time of day to fish for them? You can harass the pups all day long at times…
