Well after last weeks trip I was dying to get back down.Took my oldest son with me this time so he could experiance the hot fishing I did last weekend.
Got to the lake at 7am wasn’t to cold (18deg) hiked out to the spot got set up ad fishing by 7:30am.When I turned on my sonar I was a littled alarmed no fish anywhere and it was like that for 20 min or so.After getting my son’s pole in the water I put mine down and wham!! fish on! despite nothing on the finder,Both Chase and I were pulling them in as fast as we could take them off and get htem back down.I guess a setting on it got messed up or somthing never could figure it out I did see fish on it but not the big schools like last week.
Well after an hour letting my son catch a bunch of splake (didnt count them or keep track) I moved out to deeper water to focus on Macks.Got out to 85ft and othing on the finder,moved back in and found them in 75ft hugging the bottom.Alwaysed had a few come thru but they all had lock jaw I never hooked up,I had 2 really good hits but that was it.About 12pm I decided to go back closer where my son was to catch a few more splake before we left.
Chase had steady fishing for the most part had a few break him off.We ended up keeping 8 of the nicer ones.Weather was perfectit warmed up to the low 40’s and sunny no wind.The fish stopped biting about 2 so we packed up and headed for home.Don’t know if I will be back there befor feb,I just hope the fishing stays steady.I was a fun trip and great day to spend with my son.
Hey nice report and good pics. The first picture says it all. Can’t wait to get back down there to the old fishing holes. How thick is the ice out at 85 feet?
Myself, c-dragon, and widastick are heading down there next weekend for some overnight fishing. Posts like this get me VERY excited. We’ll report on how we do.
If you find the edge of the weed line anywhere you should catch fish.I know guys have there “spots” but the fish should bite good anywhere along the weedline.I use small tube jigs in diffrent colors,white,pink,green tipped with mealworms.If you want to try for a Mack then use bigger tube jigs tipped with perch or sucker meat in deep water.I havent had much succes yet on them.
It really helps if you have sonar to find the weedline and depths and of course fish.Good Luck!
Thanks for the advice. We’re going to the Devil’s Creek tournament on Saturday and Fish Lake on Sunday and Monday. Should be a great weekend! We’ll let you know how we do!
That sounds like our trip we might have passed you on our sleds. We were set up in about 94 feet of water outside lakeside in two red ice tents. Tons of splake and bows but missed a mac bite reeling in a splake. Great ice and nice weather!
i just got back from FL I got there yesterday I caught 6 little macs in less than an hour in the first hole i drilled it looked like it was going to be an awesome trip but it just went down hill from there. I had a hard time finding fish. I still caught them them but it was not a normal FL trip i got sick of hand drilling holes and skinned out at 11 today
Oh and i have tryed just about everything to catch them after dark with very little success.
I set one rod up with a large tube jig with sucker meat on the bottom around 90ft then one rod with an ice cutter with a meal worm at about 20 ft. I guess I can’t tell with 100% accuracy if it is a mac or splake but the splake and bows are generally higher in the water column. So we call one rod a “mac” rod trying for the big stuff and one a splake rod.
How do you know he didn’t have a underwater camera? Oh wait you don’t belive in using any high tech equipment when you fish. Agian your just trying to stir the pot.

Most of us know what you ment when you “missed a mack bite” hmm memo to PBH there is a greater chance and probibilty when your focusing on species of fish by fishing in the right depth using the right bait to target the type of fish your trying to catch it most likely was the fish that he was targeting was hitting his jig. I will agree with you are not using a camera its not 100% certian it was a Mack but the odds where still in his favor it was than not.

i have found that even fishing deep water and big jig’s at fish lake i catch 5 to 1 splake to lake trout.. so going by them odd’s i would say the odd’s are high that it was a splake.. but then again ya never know for sure tell ya pull it out of the hole..
I have to agree, I’ve probably caught as many dink spake at 75’ as I have at 20’. On the flip side, I rarely fish 20’ at FL unless I’m with you Ron, lol! Seem every time we’ve fished FL together over the past 3 years it was a might puckery to venture out past 20’ deep huh?
