Here is the full report.
I got up at 4:00 AM, took a super-fast shower, added 5 layers of clothes and hopped in the car with visions of hard water, beer, friends and the oh so sexy looking Tiger Trout.
I arrived to the meeting spot and hopped in bassackwards’ vehicle to find one of our buddies flaked out on a fishing trip, again. Little John, you are fired. That is ok, because Mike and Corey were there and both absolutely amped for our annual first ice fishing trip of the year.
We arrived to the lake pre sun up, 6:45 AM to find Cdragon there with a buddy testing the ice. We joined them on the ice to see what the story was. Was it thick enough? 2 inches there. It wasn’t looking good for an early venture on the ice. 2 inches is safe for light packed anglers, but not in the dark, so we went back to the car and drove to Cleveland and Electric to see how they looked. Cleveland had a lot of open water and E-lake was completely ice free. So we made our way back to Huntington.
We got there and decided we would try down by the dam because of how quick the drop off was.
Cdragon was walking up the ramp from venturing down by where we planned to try, we asked and he smiled, “the ice is 3-4 inches thick”. IT WAS ON! We got our stuff and made our way to the ice.
As we were walking along the shallow shoreline we were scaring fish everywhere we went. Loads of little minnows and tigers cruising the shallows, and the ice was crystal clear. It was almost like walking on water, oh wait, it was walking on water. Good thing we all have a Jesus complex. Walking on water like told in the bible… that one book.
So I drilled some holes and put the sonar in, 27 feet of water and loads of fish cruising through.
I dropped my lure down and with in 5 minutes iced the first fish. Boy, I forgot how pretty tiger trout were, especially this time of year with the “mock spawn” coloring.
For the next several hours we absolutely spanked the fish. Between the 3 of us we all managed around 80 tigers, with 2 fish each to keep for some table fare. YUMMY. They all ranged from 8-16 inches long and oh so pretty in color.
This trip was something a tad more memorable than the others in the years past. Bassackward has taken up the art of brewing some serious beer, and several flavors. I can’t name them all but I took the liberty of his “Life is Peachy Ale”. This was a brew that was flavored with peaches off of Mikes peach tree in the summer. And ooh sooo tasty. I slammed a 40 oz and had an ever so good buzz. Not too shabby! Thanks Mike!
After several hours of ripping the hell out of the fish’s lips we decided enough was enough and made our way to the burger joint in Fairview. This was a regular thing, we always finished the day with a burger, fries and a soft drink. Cure our hunger with a burger and end the trip with the satisfaction of filling our stomaches with grease.
What a great trip, as always. I have never been disappointed when going to to Huntington. AWESOME fun with friends and perty fishies.
I left the camera in Mike’s car but will post pics as soon as I get it back.
