Thanksgiving Day Ice Fishing with Huntington drive-by

Great day today with the kids on the ice. Probably caught about 100 fish between 12 people fishing. Mostly small but still fun. Did catch one 18 inch rainbow with really great girth! I was blindfolded on the way to this little gem of a pond so I can not disclose its location. [;)]

Also am including a few pics of Huntington as we drove by it. Looks pretty sketchy. There were two anglers out on it. The further guy out said it was 2-3 inches thick and scary! The places that look like open water are not actually open water. Just really clear ice!

Those kids look like they had the best of conditions to go ice fishing, I’m jealous. Huntington looks scary, I like four solid inches at least before I go out anywhere, that gives me the ‘heebee jeebees’

It really was perfect conditions! About 20 deg when we got there and within 10 minutes the sun hit the ice and it was 40 deg when we left at 10:30. The heavy coats came off fast! Everyone had a great time!

Looks like the kids (and adults :sunglasses:) had a great time. Glad you could keep the Thanksgiving ice fishing tradition alive.

you were blindfolded to fish that pond? lol. ok not a big secret on that one dude.. the albino give it away… nice bow for that pond tho! i’m looking forword to the one just east of there to freeze tho!! [sly]

Fuzzy of course you know where I was! This is your stomping grounds! But as you know this place is tiny and can’t handle the whole world fishing there. Those that know about this little gem already know where I was. Those that don’t already know about it don’t need to know. The person that told me about this pond several years ago asked that I don’t broadcast to the world where it is. I have done just that.

:sunglasses:Thanks for the report, bigcat.

CBR and Bassackward tore it up today at Huntington, so that is probably the two anglers you saw there. I didn’t ask them the thickness of the ice, but they won’t go out on anything less than 3 inches… This wouldn’t be the first year that you thought it looked sketchy up there but other anglers tore it up as you drove past. [;)] Unfortunately I wasn’t with them today (in NV for Turkey Day with my kids) but supposedly, Mike caught a 25 inch tiger. He was texting me from the bar in Fairview - as they are spending the night there and going up again tomorrow - so perhaps he had a few drinks in and was b.s.ing, but supposedly, CBR has a pic of it on his I-phone but AT&T doesn’t get reception in Fairview (that part I believe and have experienced my self). Their report should be interesting to say the least…

Happy ice fishing this weekend to all weather you are going to Scofield or Huntington. Both are doing great right now!

They may very well have tore it up there TODAY. But I was there YESTERDAY. Another cold night can add almost an inch to the ice. Hopefully it looks better today than it did yesterday. The two guys out there yesterday were not fishing together and were in separate cars so i doubt they even knew each other. And yes the ice looked sketchy and the guy out there confirmed that it was only 2-3 inches. Since you have kids you might understand that I am not willing to take kids 10, 6, and 4 years old out on sketchy ice. Its hard enough to try to save one person that falls in let alone if small kids that don’t swim well are involved. Just not worth it. So yes, once again I avoided being an idiot and getting on sketchy ice with my children. In stead we caught over 100 fish on safe ice. I think I chose wisely… once again. Glad your friends did well up there and look forward to pics of a 25 inch tiger.

lol well same reson i did not give out the name my self! it is a fun little fishing hole some times tho..well i was up to huntington yesterday and it was 4 inch’s of ice not bad at all but the fishing sucked.. no one was doing very good at all.. there was about 40 or so out there fishing..

I would be carful of any fish stories told from a bar. The only 20 plus inch fish I saw yesterday was a Cutt from a hole CBR was fishing from until he left. As he left 3 guys came on the ice, they came over and dropped their lines in CBR’s holes with in 10 minutes one guy had on a 20 plus inch fat Cutt he took pictures and released the fish for anther day, it may show up on another website. By the way this was not on Huntington in search of better fishing we left Huntington. We where catching fish just not very fast and small fish, it was a slow day compared to previous years.

:sunglasses:Whassamatta wit you? Don’t you know those guys well enough by now to discount anything they tell YOU…especially after spending more than 5 minutes in front of those truth-altering liquids.

Did you write that book “Gullible’s Travels”?

Fish population and average sizes are waaaay down at Huntington. Still lotsa fish but not big schools of big fish all over the lake as in years past. Too much harvesting going on these days.

10 of us went to Hunnington today. We fished from sunup till about noon. We were all over the lake and caught a total of 10 or so. Very slow. Did I mention it was not a fast day of fishing. The ice averaged 4 inches and was very safe. We did not experience any cracking. Part of the group left and went over to Gooseberry. I think that is how it is spelled. They caught quite a few. My group went over to Cleveland and watched some guys fish there. They weren’t catching anything. We finally ended up at Scofield about 2 and caught a grundel of small fish. Lots of dinks. We stayed until about 4:30. All in all, a nice day out of the house.

O4T,
Still waiting to hear the “tore it up” report from your friends with the alleged 25" fish. Hmmmmm… Sure glad I kept driving…

Widastick and I hit Huntington on the 27th as well. I think we saw you there Fuzzy… were you in a blue coat? Anyway… like you said, fishing was slow. We fished by the dam for a little while and caught a few. Then we packed up and headed north a little bit to one of the turnouts. We thought if we got away from the crowd that we might get into a few more Tigers. Not the case.[frown] We did catch a few more, but it wasn’t like it was last year. Oh well, we’ll try it again when the ice gets a little thicker.

:sunglasses: I hear ya on being extra safe with taking the kids out. That makes plenty of sense to me, man. I didn’t realize that Mike and Craig went on the day after you had filed that report. Got my dates mixed up.

This is going to be a great ice season, I can feel it!! I’m so excited and also excited to finally have my kids big enough to take out there for their first time after I get a shelter. My kids are only 5 and 3 so I’ve gotta take extra precautions to make sure they are warm enough to still like it…

Good fishin’ to ya!

:sunglasses:yeah, me too, LOL… I guess Mike was already pretty hammered when he told me that stuff… I had a feeling he was probably full of it… I think I’ll go to Scofield this Saturday. I hope that the ice is starting to move out the channel further and into the main lake… I like to ice fish around the shacks…
