Exciting Day at East Canyon

Well, my brother and I decided to go to East Canyon today despite the weather reports.

It was a BLAST !! We got to fight the elements and the fish..

It was quite a windy day with a bit of rain off and on. I’ve never seen white caps on East Canyon, but then again, I’ve only fished there 3 times before..

We went to Fish Tech before going up to East Canyon and they told us all about how to catch the Smallmouth Bass and sold us about $18.00 worth of rubber worms, weights and Texas Rig hooks. We tried it all just like they told us, but only got a few bites, and didn’t get anything to stay on the hook.

We decided we were going to go for the trout because the Bass weren’t cooperating.

We headed south along the west side bank and couldn’t see any fish on the fish finder. We pulled into a couple coves and finally got lucky and caught a Bass using a nightcrawler.

We tried trolling with everything we could think of, but didn’t have any pop gear. We didn’t get much luck until we switched to plain old fashioned Night Crawlers again. Just a Night Crawler on a hook and a weigh on it to keep it down under the water while trolling.

We boated only 3 rainbows, but they were quite feisty and fought hard. One of them even jumped out of the water a couple times before I got him in the boat.

All in all, it was definitely “A Fine And Pleasant Misery” to quote Patrick McManus (my favorite outdoors author).

If anybody has any advice about East Canyon and what works best there, I would really love to hear it. I love trout fishing most of all, but haven’t really tried Bass so I don’t know what works on them. I am also new to fishing on a lake from a boat. Just got my boat last year and have only really had success on Strawberry.

See ya all later,
Curtis

The fact of the matter is that most of the big bassers around Utah use summer rigs starting in spring and here is the problem with the bass gear you bought. That stuff works great when the bass are consistently active but this time of year EC has low temps in the mid 30’s to mid 40’s at night and the fish will remain a little sluggish until the water gets above 60 degrees at depths between 10 and 20 ft and stays that way. If you want a big boy and you are working hard and thorough you might pick up a beast. It’s hard to say that the bassers aren’t necessarily onto a pattern though because I wasn’t there to witness your presentation of the tackle you bought and whether or not you were presenting it correctly. Quite frankly, finesse jigs and proper presentation will land the most smallmouth until it warms up and stays that way. Try brown and white tube jigs on a 1/16 oz. jighead off of the brush line in coves and on main lake points and you will do alot of damage. Give it another month for the tackle you bought to start going after them.

I’ll give it a shot in a month. Thanks for the advice !!
