There were rumors that the Lower Weber River was finally taking a break from its ferocious summer rampage…and they were just rumors! The river was still raging…fast, high and muddy. Me I was persistant…fished my spots for over an hour…and got NOTHING!
This section of the river is typically still and clear!
Not wanting to call the day a complete waste I decided to take the scenic way home…and when I turned the corner and saw East Canyon Reservoir, my foot hit the brakes, and I exited the car in a hurry with the fly rod in hand.
The 1st thing I noticed is just how LOW that water level is.
Put on the Psycodellic Prince Nymph and got over 10 micro mini SMB’s. So I put on the sinking line, and a large Purple Bunny…and finally got some 12 inch Smallmouths…in the end I got 12, 12in SMB’s before I had to be back in the valley.
Well done! I have never had a bass on a fly… Something to check off my bucket list some day!
The color Purple works well for bass…and the bigger the better too! Just do not horse them in…when you feel a head shake let them run a little bit. The more they head shake when you have 100% tension on the line…the more the hook digs a hole in their mouth…making it much easier for the fish to become un hooked.
It was pretty fun watching the purple bunny hit the water, then seeing a greenish/brownish shape come up and take it!
I really believe that East Canyon is one of the most underrated lakes in Utah. I have never been skunked going there.
Agreed, although I can never manage a trout in the summer, and never a bass through the ice…but both seasons are really good to me. One day I will have it mastered…one day!
nice man, you cant beat the bass on the fly. good report atleast your getting into some good bass still up there. i havent been since the crappie spawn but maybe one more trip there before ice is a possibilty.
Ya speaking of color changes on leafs i see a difference in the leave every time i wake up to school and come back home every day more trees are changing and you know that there’s tons of trees where i live XD.
