Glutton for punishment after yesterdays trip felling a bit secondhand but hey… Anyway, up at 4:30 at Deer Creek fishing by 6:15. It was still dark when I landed my 1st one. Just a smallish bass but it was a good start. I was fishing around the island. Was using the old faithful 3inch Gulp minnow paddle tail worm thingy in the pumpkin seed sumthin sumthin… Next cast I was on again then nothing. I padlled around the island back and forth for not a lot of return. Got my first ever Blue Gill but he was pretty small. Paddled back to where I got my early fish a changed to a sparkle tail hard body lure my mate gave me. He said they were his Dads. It was still in the original box and look like it was from the 80’s or there abouts.
Anyway I got hit hard by a bass with a bit more weight and enjoyed the fight.
All up I landed 6 bass and a blue gill. It is my young blokes birthday later this week so I kept the bass for him. Think he will be nice on the barbie with a bit of lemon!
Congrats on the catch. Hate to burst your bluegill bubble but that fish you have in the picture is a Green Sunfish. The metallic spots on the face and the golden fins are what separates the 2 species…that and they have a much bigger mouth. Glad to see that some Green Sunfish are starting to appear at DC. Been way to long since I have heard of anyone catching them up there. And 6 SMB’s is a great total for DC by the way. Thanks for your report.
Well there ya go! It had blue on it’s gill and I ASSumed…[:p]
hahahaha…Well then it was my 1st Green Sunfish!!!
Thanks for straightening that out mate. I saw you blitzed em up at Mantau the other day? Might have to get myself up there and try and catch some bass. [fishin]
No worries…when my twin (tyedyetwin) caught his 1st Greenie we thought it was a Bluegill too. Then a mis-informed bank tangler told us that it was a bluegill and we thought for sure it was one. Then the people of the internet corrected us thankfully. Ironically it was the same story as you…instead of our 1st Bluegill we got our 1st Green Sunfish. Even when I caught my 1st Greenie a few months later I kinda thought it was a cross-breed for the same reasons you mistaked it for a Bluegill. Turns out is was just a Green Sunfish. Mantua is ON FIRE right now. Try fishing the knoll (for LMB’s and bluegill) on the other side of the lake and then to the north of the knoll for Perch and Bluegill. Those bluegill are everywhere around the knoll right now (anywhere from 30 feet off shore to 700 feet off shore). We caught way more from the boat than the bank tanglers. Those Bluegills are nearly impossible to keep off the hook…unless you are Marinespear (just kidding man).

Thanks again!
Go and get those LMB’s, now is the time!
Anyways thanks for the report on DC. As usual you seem to have them down pretty good up there. Congrats on the greenie. Those are my favorite fish to catch! I have heard that they are in there but I had yet to see picture proof. Oh yeah, how in the world do you get up that early? Truly dedicated my friend, more than me even. I am looking foreward to your next trip report.

I have found the best time to catch fish is as the sun comes up or goes down. Back home in Australia I live 2 mins walk to the beach where I fish every Saturday and Sunday morning. I am up at 4am and on the water by 4:15. So no sleep ins for me (by choice of course)
It drives my wife nuts that I get up that early to fish. I like being there before light hits. Its always nice to be on the lake before the Power Squadron make it choppy. Especially at DC. Its also really relaxing and peaceful that early. Can’t beat it.
Well that is something you would have to ask the fish gods. I hope they are in 2 weeks as I will be headed to Willard Bay/Mantua again at that time.
In the mean time just listen to the reports and hope for the best. We pick up LMB’s every time we go out there so I would be willing to bet you will find one. Sorry I am not more of a bass expert. Maybe someone else on here could answer that one for you.
