…I enjoy seeing dogs out…but one thing I must say is yesterday on PV was a little much…a group of folks came out about an hour after we did and had two dogs that were running all over the place chasing other dogs that came out and including going to other anglers including us and knocking over rods and such.
Folks if you take your dogs on the ice please be respectful of others fishing and keep them under control and with YOU!!! IMHO the ice isn’t your personal backyard or the doggie park… We love dogs hands-down and have our own 4-legged tongue licking tail wagging dog… but to have unknown dog(s) come up to you knocking over your stuff, get tangled up in line, get into YOUR equipment, and finally taking a crap and leak not more than 10’ from where I’m fish’n REALLY pushes the test button for me …I shooed these dogs away several times. If they came over again…I was going to walk over and have a chit chat with the owners…
Now what a wonderful way to have a faimly adventure and take your young Children out and enjoy the winter sport of ice fishing…and with that being said…there were Children running all over like they were on a grade school playground…throwing fish up in the air and slamming fish into the ice and at each other right by us…jumping and trying to break through previous frozen ice holes…the ice on PV in the area we were was safe for the most part…but you just don’t know…please be mindful of what your children are doing and respectful of other anglers in the area…needless to say as politey as possible I asked the two young boys to move over to where their parents were and play…
I’m not trying to seem as a ‘Grumpy Gills’ [;)] as we want all to have fun…but please if you’re going on the ice with Dogs and/or your Children please keep them under control being respectful of other anglers in the area.
I understand that people have a right to act how they want; but where are kids around, PLEASE refrain from dropping the F-Bomb repeatedly. I realize some people have a hard time controlling themselves, but let’s use some common sense.
As the above post mentioned, the Ice Cap (and outdoors in general), are not a single person’s personal playground. Let’s be respectful of others.
(Now if only the folks in the red tents @ Hyrum actually read this.)
Excellent thread! As the proud owner of two four-legged companions and the proud father of three little boys I make sure my ‘kids’ all behave. If they can’t we leave. It is not fair to everyone else on the water to have a rowdy bunch yahoos running around with no sense of personal space or property. It also serves as a reminder to the kids that if they want to be out fishing with me they have to behave. You may miss out on a few days of fishing to prove your point to your kids but it won’t be long before they understand that misbehaving means missing out.
AND I SECOND THE F-BOMB!!! LEAVE IT AT THE POKER GAME!!!
I wish I could say I am not guilty of that word, but seriously, I if I were in k2muskie’s shoes, I would not bet on that word NOT coming out.
I have no patience for that kind of disrespect for others. It is PUBLIC sure, which means more then yourself are allowed.
I would look at it as the other peoples temporary yard. I don’t let my kids play in their yard and I sure don’t let my dog run and do business in other peoples yard.
If there is PEOPLE around, I give a crap how well someones dog is trained…LEASH IT AND CLEAN UP AFTER IT. You tell me a dog won’t bite, and I got to call B.S. You can’t bet on that. I have seen the tamest of dogs go postal.
And I guess the same for kids. You want them to grow up good, they got to start NOW.
Like kids in Toy stores at Christmas time and parents no where to be found…The parents should be jailed for abandonment.
If your kids are out there and I’m catching fish they can use every one of my rods! They are the future of fishing and if we don’t get them involved we will lose it all![fishin]
If you dog comes over, I carry milkvbones in my bag.

It didn’t sound like these kids were fishing or interested in it. Two different things.
I prefer you don’t give my dog anything…seriously, I don’t know you from Adam and I try to train my dog NOT to accept anything from Strangers, just like my kids (if I still had little ones)
I don’t walk on water, but I do fish rivers and I get very upset while putting a fly on to have that beautiful yellow lab stepping on my expensive gear and snagging line…Not to mention, I have never stepped in my dogs Poo, so why should I be stepping in theirs?
MM I am in total agreement on getting kids involved. ANYONE wants to introduce there child in the basics of fly fishing, get a hold of me and we can meet on a pond.
But, if the child is NOT interested and won’t pay attention, it just isn’t a good place to be.
Well I have to say in right there with you. People should keep their dogs and kids under control. I do think that kids will be kids and dogs will be dogs but there has to be a line some where.
I was on pineview on saturday and this young dad and his little boy were fishing next to me. Maybe ten feet away. I was hammering small perch and crappie and they weren’t. As I watched the little boy grow bored and restless he began stoping on the ice moaning he was cold and bored.
So i waked over to them and asked them if they had any luck. The dad answered no and that they were going to leave. So before they could I offered them a stay in out shanty with the heater and our good friends underwater camera. The little boy just had a blast after that catching more fish than I.
I loved seeing him so happy. But I still dont know there names or who they are but the diffinatlay had a great time.[reply][/reply]
Way to go! Someone did the same thing for me and my boys last year at PV when we were having no luck. (it was also the first time we had ever ice fished PV) As a result, my boys love to ice fish!
I second all that. It’s all about respect for others and the resources. I had 5 of my 7 kids (ages 6 to 17) out on the ice iwth me yesterday and I doubt anyone could tell there were kids with me without visual evidence because I’ve taught them self control, courtesy, and respect. It’s really nice to have others actually come up to us and thank us for the way our children behave. I for one believe that children only behave the way they are taught/allowed. Oh and, wow, the same can actually be said for the little furballs. When I had one he was taught dicipline so I didn’t have to yell at him all the time.
I had a problem with a dog at causey on friday, Saw two people walk onto the ice with 6 dogs and no ice fishing equipment. One of the dogs decided it needed to investigate every person on the ice, came up to me sniffed around my stuff barked at me moved over to the next tent sniffed around came back to me and started sniffing in my stuff, at this point i was getting ready to leave and that dog followed me back to the dam barking at me needless to say i was a little annoyed and started looking around for the owners. Spotted them about 100 yards away trying to call this dog and it wouldn’t listen another group of anglers was getting on the ice so it decided to torment them and left me alone.
My opinion is IF you bring your dog with you keep it under control and if you cant leave, and CLEAN UP THE DOG CRAP, sure its a frozen lake but noone wants to dodge dog bombs in the middle of a frozen reservoir.
I think the majority of people that can benefit from this message are probably not members of this sight. My guess is that most, if not all BFTers probably are not the ones causing the problems. My gut reaction is usually not so friendly but maybe a patient reminder to the offenders would go a long way.
Yes a polite reminder is in order for those folks. Most of them probably deal with them all day and don’t think about others that don’t. I like dogs and I love kids, especially fishing kids, I don’t like having to babysit other peoples pets and kids. A little friendliness will go a long way.
I know a guy who keeps a canned airhorn…like for boats…in his ice gear. He hits an approaching pooch with a blast from that horn and I guess it is pretty funny to watch the dog flip over backwards or slide on the ice.
Nothing cute or endearing about a “friendly” dog checking out your set up and getting tangled in your lines…and breaking rods. Had it happen. No excuse for it…especially when the owner is laughing because they think it is funny.
There is nothing funny about someone else’s dog trashing your gear. I was talking about the culprits being a little more fisherman “friendly”. I don’t want anyone’s dog in the middle of my stuff while I’m out. If someone wants to take their dog on the lake they need to keep them close, if that means a leash law so be it. The guy should’ve offered to replace your gear instead of laughing about it.
I agree with the reminders. I’ve had numerous occasions when I’ve asked a fisherman to please refrain from swearing, especially when I have the kids along, and 98% of the time they are more than willing to comply and are even apologetic.
I have found when riding bikes, if you have dogs that are a problem, a small squirt gun (or bottle) filled with a mix of ammonia and water works wonders. It doesn’t take much ammonia in the water to be effective.
It isn’t a good idea to use it on kids though! [:)]
A lake is a public place and public manners should be the rule for everyone. That way everyone has a good experience in the outdoors.
