I have a large dog and take it with me fishing, regularly. However, it stays in my boat and when I’m fishing from shore it is on a leash. I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT, when someone who takes a dog with them fishing, hunting etc.and then the dog takes off and torments others. And by “torment” I simply mean coming around other people when they are fishing and enjoying their personal time. Not to mention the dog swimming out in the water in front of someone while fishing. This has happened to me and the owner’s excuse was, “the dog doesn’t scare the fish, so don’t worry”. I beg to differ. I really like Tube Dude’s friend’s method. I’m gonna try that. But I do know that pepper spray works wonders on dogs. If some dog came swimming past me and tangling my gear it would be peppered sprayed immediately. Then I might consider spraying the owner of the dog just for good measure!
Too bad there aren’t leash laws on the ice. Or maybe there are…
I don’t know what county PV is in, but I’d bet they have a leash law. There’s one in most jurisdictions. Just because you’re on the ice does not exempt you from the law. The law applies on a frozen lake just as it would in a public park.
I don’t know what county PV is in, but I’d bet they have a leash law.Pineview is in Weber County and yes, they do have a leash law. Here is the specific paragraph quote:
2-4-8 Animals at Large Prohibited. It shall be unlawful for any animal, as defined herein, to be allowed, either negligently or with specific intent, to run at large, as defined in chapter one (1) of this ordinance. However, dogs may be at large while participating in field trials and obedience classes organized and sanctioned by recognized dog clubs, while assisting their owner or trainer in legal hunting or in herding of livestock, while assisting a peace officer engaged in law enforcement duties, or while being trained for the above purposes, or while on the owner’s private property, so long as such dogs are under the direct and effective sound or gesture control, and within sight of owners or such individuals noted above, to assure that such animals do not violate any provisions of this ordinance.

I was thinkin’ fireworks. Something loud. The air horn would work well. My golden retriever has no fear of fireworks though. She tries to get grab them. And most kids would just want more. I’ll bet there’s a run on air horns at Sportsman’s this week.
To all of you that have kids that are loud, like to play around on the ice… You are more than welcome to bring them up and fish with us. Loud kids that like to play and have fun are fine with me.
Your kids are welcome to use my bait, and gear if needed!!
I don’t expect kids to be 100% interested, all the time. The main goal is to keep them warm and at least get some enjoyment out of the experience.
My kids have always been good about staying right with us and not wandering off. I wouldn’t let them.
Dogs are a pain. But I have only had a few issues. Most times, people are pretty good with.
If these issues really get on your nerves as much as you say they do, things must be going pretty well for you.
I think the majority of people that can benefit from this message are probably not members of this sight. My guess is that most, if not all BFTers probably are not the ones causing the problems. My gut reaction is usually not so friendly but maybe a patient reminder to the offenders would go a long way.
Pssst - it’s the lurkers!!!
And there are laws that cover it. Dogs should not be off leash, or out of control in public - period! And NO animal should be pooping in the lake. Yes ON the ice is till IN the lake!!!
Amen to all the above I say, except the folks who thinks it’s ok, and will offer a rod to an obnoxious kid making a noisy mess or a biscuit to “encourage” an unruly dog.
I’d say offer then a stick rather than a rod (like the olden days in the little red schoolhouse! As in - across the knuckles!)
I have kids, I have had lots of dogs. I’ve seen some very well behaved dogs on the ice. But I know not all are.
So what about those piles of fish outside someone’s tent? I wouldn’t sweat a few waxworms getting nibbled, but I know MY dogs always wanna get in on MY catches when I get home. Can’t imagine eating a bunch of raw fish and bones and guts can be any good for a pooch.
I also agree with Lavaman on the swearing thing. It’s one thing to get excited, but another to bellow obscenities within earshot (and sound carries on the lake!) of kids. I think there’s laws about that too.
Same complaint for boaters with load stereos. Blasting some R-rated ghetto rap about male body parts - while little girls are waiting for the tube to get tugged - that just ain’t right! Have a little respect for others.
Ok - maybe a LOT of respect for others.
Good thread. Good topic. Where’s a ranger when you need one!
Wow. I am new to posting on this site, but I must reply and apologize to everyone on this thread and most especially to k2muskie for my lack of control over my two dogs which I am sure were the cause of this concern by all who commented to k2muskie’s post.
I will not hide behind silence hoping this goes away.
I am the owner of the two dogs (one an old Golden Retriever, the other a Chocolate Lab). I also invited the parents of the two boys to go fishing with me. I will not comment on the boys actions which some of you took offense to.
As far as the dogs go, I have learned a powerful lesson from all of your comments which I completely agree with. It’s too bad I did not recognize the lack of respect I was showing other fishermen when I exercised little control over them. Let me say this will never happen again. I will bring my 10 year old plus Golden with me on occassion, but I will insure that he will never be a bother to other fishermen.
Again, I feel terrible for not having the foresight to avoid this display of poor sportsmanship on my part. I thank each of you for this lesson in fishing ethics.
I hope my apology will be accepted.
Way to sack up and take it like a man. See this is how we learn from our own mistakes. It isnt until someone tells you that you are in the wrong.
Zig:
A classy post as far as I am concerned. And, I will say great job on introducing some kids to fishing.
If you are welcome to fish with us anytime and your dogs are welcome to tag along. We fish over in Rich county so if you are ever over this way look me up..
I’m kinda with you about the kids. I love to see them have fun as long as they show some respect. Those few that smart off when asked not to do something I’d just as soon drown. As for dogs, I love most of them. It’s the dumbass owners I have a problem with.
Classy, Classy, Classy…zig apology excepted hands down…[;)] this was a win-win and learn-learn for all.
We love animals especially Dogs…we ourselves have a Chocolate Lab and would love to take her on the ice but don’t…she’s goes camping and in the boat with us…camping she’s on a lease out of the boat she’s on a lease.
With respect to your friends children well again they didn’t seem one bit interested in fish’n…maybe when I asked them to go over by you folks they did…I know with especially young children they will be bored and want to find other ways to entertain themselves…they just need to be taught especially in public areas to be mindful and respectful of others around them.
Many times over our 3 years of ice fish’n here in Utah we’ve had Dads with their children come up to us as they see us catching fish and we show them what to do…I’ve punched holes for folks when the ice is thick and they have a manual auger, I’ve given up my rod and flasher to show a Dad and his son how they worked and they were so happy to catch fish…I’ve even donated tackle to folks while on the ice.
If anything this thread has made each and everyone of us aware of others around us…we all are out to have a great time on the ice…everyone must be respecful and mindful of those others not in our party we may be fish’n by.
Finally I agree 3000% with earlier statements about dropping the F-bomb when children are present…yes I’ll be the first to admit I’ve dropped that word while fish’n but I do make sure it’s only heard between me and my fish’n buds…no children present.
zig…this is a great forum…sure hope to read some of your posts…
All the best and win-win learn-learn…we’ve all made our mistakes…it’s called being human.
Respectfully,
K2 ![]()

Now if you could just remedy our problems at work this easily.[;)]
Regarding leash laws, isn’t there a law at most reservoirs that provide water for cities, that dogs are not allowed in or near the water? I know my brother was not allowed to bring his dog near Dear Creek last summer. Isn’t Pineview a supply for Ogden? If anyone with an understanding of the law could better explain that that would be appreciative,
Zig -
Welcome to the forum! That post is one of the classiest acts I’ve seen on the forum. It just goes to show us all that we might not know what is offensive or bothersome to those around us. That is especially true for us dog lovers. It honestly never occurred to me that some people just don’t like dogs until it was pointed out to me by my sister-in-law.
As has been said, I think we would all do ourselves a big favor to have open and polite communications with the people around us. It’s easier to call the owner’s attention to the situation than put up with it all day. Now an owner/parent that has no respect for you after you’ve made your feelings known is another matter all together.
Again, classy post. I think you’re more than forgiven by all.
There are some parks that dogs are not allowed in the water but on the ice ? There should be a law passedon dogs on the ice because they will urinate and poop allover its just the way they are. Dont get me wrong i own a dog and take her fishing with me on occasions but when the ice melts were does all the crap go?
I would like to see owners take that TRASH bag with them for just that. Not the pee as it does get plenty watered down, but the mess. Some dogs have a parasite or worms and the owner doesn’t know this. Other dogs smell it! Not to mention the mess on boot soles. Not hard to bend over with a bag on your hand and grab it like you would a ball. Then fold the bag over it and throw it away…pretty easy.
Domestic animals are not the same as wild, we are their masters and responsible for them. This goes for all they do.
Ive looked up some stuff. Pineview is under the US Forest Service…Couldnt find actual leash laws on that. Im still looking into it…Im for dogs to be on a leash. kids too if they cant be controlled…
j/k…but when u are talking about trying to keep water clean folks…get real…do u think all the ducks, geese, deer, antelope, etc…stay 20 feet from the water when they pee or poop? probably not! the water will be treated before the cities use it… but its the courtesy on the water…and on the ice that I find lacking.
I wonder if the guy that did the unplanned 360 on the snow machine yesterday at PV needed to change clothes?..lol
Thanks cadresults, manzquad, K2muskie, twinkielk15, for making me feel welcome on this site. And thanks in advance to others who may respond to my apology.
This is a terrific site which I visit often and from which I learn a lot, owing to the unselfish attitude of
