My three boys and I made the drive to Currant Creek with a friend and his three boys today and arrived to the lake with about 32 degree temps at 9:30. Went out on the dam and passed a group reeling in a fish right as we arrived. Fish were jumping all over the place and actively cruising near the dam so we were pretty excited to get on the fish.
I had rigged up my poles last night so I could hurry and bait up as soon as we arrived. I put on a worm on one pole, and a full red shiner minnow on another for my two younger boys while me and my oldest son attempted some spinners for a few minutes trying to get a feel for what would be on the menu.
First cast with the minnow (thanks for the tip LOAH) about 2 feet under a float and it was game on. Except, the 3 inch minnow was too big and the fish swam with it for a few seconds before I attempted a hook set and pulled the bait out of its mouth. Realized moderation was the ticket and starting using halves. Bites were fast and steady but hard to set using a small single barb hook. Changed to trebles and landed 2 fairly quickly. Nice rainbows about 13 and 14 inches and fat. 10 am- the wind picked up and started blowing right in our faces and slowed the action. We’ve never been to CC so we decided to go look for a sheltered bay and drove to the west side of the lake. The wind was slower but the water didnt drop off as fast and was more mossy. Managed another cutt and a a 15 inch rainbow before the boys had decided it was too cold and had had enough. So not a lot of fins on the shore, but a ton of bites and we broke our dry spell and kept the little guys happy. I will be heading back there as soon as possible, Does the road get plowed in the winter? Might make for a fun ice trip. Didnt manage a tiger like we hoped but that gives us incentive to head back as soon as we can. Good day, coulda been warmer but we were lucky to go as late as we did and it was nice to land some fish for the boys. I attached some pics, sorry if they are too big, they are from my cell phone and I dont know how to resize.
here’s the pics…took me a few tries
awesome pics of your boys! thats what makes trips like that worth the drive
Always a good trip when the young guys reel’em in, great pics. Fished that same spot on the dam the day after memorial day with my 10 yr old and he had a blast.
Don’t know if the road is maintained in the winter.
Things may have changed I haven’t been up there in a couple of years but in the past the road is only plowed up to the dam.
Last year they did not plow the road at all. The only access was by snow mobile. Not sure what they plan to do this year.
thanks, it might have to be a spring trip for me then if they don’t plow the road. I would imagine that would be an awesome lake on the ice if you can get to it.
