I am thinking about taking my son out tomight for some crawdadding. I hear that the berry has a bunch but I am not really that familiar with the lake. Can anyone tell me a good place to go on the lake to find some crawdads? Thanks.
I have always done well at the Soldier Creek Marina. Catch them around the riprap of the marina.
I think you can get them just about anywhere around the lake. I was watch a group today catch them at the Renegade Marina. They had a bunch - I just think there are more on the SC side.
Thanks for the advice. I was not able to make it up there yet but am planning on the next couple of days.
Do you find that they are more active after dark or can you catch them during the day as well?
Thanks again.
I was up there Sunday after crawdads and caught more than I thought. Catching them is the fun part, then the work begins…kind of like hunting. I was across the bay from the Strawberry marina, the kiddos had chicken legs on a string and did great but I was wading the shoreline (about knee deep) and pickin’ them off with my fishing net. I could get around 30 or so before I dumped the net in the live well. Ended up with five 14 lb. buckets of crawdads in about four hours. Then the work began.
There is a thin layer of moss on the bottom and the 'dads would try to hide in it as I came wading up but I would just scoop them up. It was almost too easy.
There are also loads of em in Lost Creek Res. I didn’t see any of much size, but they seemed plentiful. Typically with my experience with crawdads, after dark is generally best; but i’ve also done fine during the day too. I grew up on Gunnison Bend Res and spent a lot of time catching the crawdads with all sorts of different methods. Traps, bait, or waiting until fall when the water dropped and digging up their burrows (that’s where the biggun’s came in).
Back in KS, we’d just use a seine net along the bank and generally did pretty well. Haven’t done it in UT, & I don’t recall seeing anything in the regs against it, but I’ll have to double check that.
Been a long time since I had me a crawdad boil. May be about time form another. If I do go, anybody wanna come along? Just send me a PM and we’ll see what we can put together.
So here’s a mess from the berry. We brought back 10 Doz tails. The cut was caught on a #9 black and silver broke back.
