Columbus Day at Strawberry

A friend of mine (Vic) and I decided to brave the tail end of the weekend storm and try fishing the Berry today. I’m glad we did. Since I had gotten a foot of snow in my yard on Sunday, I figured that I would have to bring a snow shovel and rock salt to get up and down the ramp. I was also concerned that the wind might be too much for my little 14 foot boat.

We left Ogden around 4:00 AM and the closer to the lake we got, the less snow and wind there was. I was pretty happy to see no snow at all anywhere around the lake.

We decided to launch at Renegade and fish a few of my favorite spots on the south end. As we drove past Haws Point, my truck said it was only 9 degrees!!! Lots of “steam” coming off the lake. Cool to look at but WOW is that cold on the face!

We launched around 7:30 into 50 degree water. We caught a couple in the marina area and then headed to some of my favorite holes.

We only caught 10 fish each before we called it quits at 11:00. The wind was starting to kick up and we had honey-does waiting for us at home.

While working some Lucky Craft SP-78 Ghost Brown and Arora Browns along the shallows, Vick caught a 23" and I caught this nice 26 1/2" cut which I kept for supper.

While cleaning it in my back yard, I curiously checked to see what might be in it’s stomach. Like a magic trick, I pulled out a 5 1/2" chub … then another … then another! She was also full of roe and I kind of wished I would have left her in the lake. Oh well, should make an awful good supper along with some squash out of the neighbor’s garden.

I found a new way to work those pointers. Works pretty good:

Our larger fish of the day came in on the pointers. Every thing else on tube jigs tipped with chub. I tried some surface Sammy walking the dog but to no avail. The under-water dog walking was much more productive.

Way to go Coot . Sounds cold up there . I fish those pointers that way all the time . Don’t worry about the roe in the cutt . It just didn’t spawn . I have noticed that before with them coming out as I unhook them in october . They will absorb the eggs .

Nice work Old Coot, throwing in the shallows I assume. I’ve had a few big days up there recently myself, no time to post (or inclination, after being hammered in the past on BFT or PM for catching too many fish). What was the water temp after the stormy weekend?

Quit stealing from your neighbors garden!

Good looking fishy there!

Sorry coot, wasn’t trying to hijack your thread, merely commenting on one of the oddities of BFT, glad to see you’re kickin’ butt at the Berry.

Way to go Ralph! You definitely made up for quantity in the quality department! That 26 1/2 incher is a TOAD!

Excellent report!

Looks like Scofield will have the same regs as the Berry with the additional benefit of the Tiger Trout under the same regs. Give that lake a couple years and I’ll have a hard time deciding where to fish!

Chris, " … no inclination to post after being hammered for catching too many fish …"???

When that happens to me, I take it as a compliment. And to you I tip my hat for teaching me what I know about fall plug throwing at the Berry.

At just 10 fish for the day, I wouldn’t quite call it “kickin’ butt”. But that 26er was nice I must admit. Had it with a side dish of sweet butter nut squash tonight … yummmmm. But that will be the last one to come home with me this year. The rest are going back in the lake.

The water temp was 50 when we launched and 51 when we left around 11:00.

I thought of you several times today as I worked the shores. Thanks again …

Very nice report, Sir Coot. Thanks for the information on what type of lure to use and how to work it.

That was a very impressive cutty you finessed into the boat.

Congrats.

Nice report and pictures, the pointers are great baits…
I guess the water is now blow 55 for all those who was waiting…

Oh yes for all the ones who send me the PM’s saying I’m not catching what I do don’t worry I won’t catch anything again tomorrow…:sunglasses:[sly][crazy]
And all the pictures that TD posts for me he photo shops them real good too…[;)][crazy]

Way to go Ralph!! Good report!

Cliff I cant belive you had Tubedude photoshop all them pics!![crazy] I thought you were a honest guy![:p] You are just a fish story teller!!![:p][:p][:p][:p][:p] LMFAO

WOW nice fish 26 1/2, I am sure you did not know that you
Had 4 fish out of one, nice for the pan, you should have skined
those as well, [:p].
As for the being slamed for to many fish PP, take it as a compliment
that you know more than others, they are just slow people. [;)]
with nothing better to do in life than pick on others,
Let’s all do the Berry some day and some pan cooking.
Thanks Uncle for the report :sunglasses:

Nice fish Ralph !!! I’ve been trying to get up there for the last few weeks and just haven’t had the time.
later chuck

Yep all I do is have the masked man catch them for me and all I have to do is hold them up…[angelic][;)]

Good fish!! while you guys were up there did you happen to see lots of ducks or geese?? planning a trip there soon to get me another trophy bird

I was up there last Thursday and came across a lot of ducks back in the bays. In fact, in one of the small bays, it seemed like duck fest in one of south end ( renegade area) bays in the morning. Fishing was good too, until the BIG W came in around 9:30 AM and blew HARD taking everything off the lake for the rest of the day.
