Catching Up - Berry/DC/Lunch Vids

Posting trip reports hasn’t been much of a priority lately and that’s mostly due to a lack of good fishing. The week after my last report on Boulder, I stayed home and did the family thing, which was really nice.

During the week, I’ve been hammering the white bass on my lunch breaks, which I’ve gotten a couple of videos of lately. It’s so easy to catch them this time of year, I can’t resist.

Here’s one coming from an awful looking irrigation box, where surface scum collects to form a thick film. It’s pretty nasty looking, but the water is crystal clear, underneath. The fish don’t seem to mind.

Last weekend, my family and I decided to brave the cold and wind at Strawberry, where they quickly rethought and ended up back in the truck while I fished for a couple of hours.

It wasn’t great fishing, but I ended up figuring out the presentation the fish were looking for, just as I ran out of minnows, which was one of two methods I could get a tug out of.

None of the fish were very great, but a couple of 19" cutts and a few smaller rainbows, up to 15" came to visit. After awhile, I started feeling bad about leaving my family in the truck, so I packed up and we left.

Nothing too special, but it’s nice to get out of the house, at least.

This week, staying close to home was the plan. My first stop was the Lower Provo, just below the dam at Deer Creek. The plan was to fly fish, but I quickly abandoned that for jigs and lures, as a strong breeze kept me busy untying knots rather than casting.

Despite trying for more than two hours, I couldn’t get anything to commit to a strike. Deer Creek Reservoir would be where I finished my day.

The fishing was pretty steady for little smallmouth bass using Gulp! minnows and fishing them along the bottom. A marabou jig picked up one, but switching to the scented plastic proved to be a good move.

An 18 inch rainbow took interest in one cast and provided the only trout of the day. It fought like crazy and took quite awhile to get a hold of.

A first for me at Deer Creek, a tiny green sunfish also found my hook.

Though the river was a waste of time, catching a bunch of smallies and a good rainbow on a nice day topped it off quite nicely.

Happy Fishing, Humans.

Here’s the other lunch break video.

Nice pics and video. Thanks for the update.

Weird thats cool u found a nice white bass hole haha. My only question is why are they in a irrigation box, ditch or what ever u call it?

That’s freaking awesome. I’ve got a few “lunch break” spots around the T-Ville area that are similar in nature. Sometimes, you just need a guaranteed bendo.

In Lindon, most of the irrigation is from natural creeks that have been manipulated to flow around farmland, but since they’re not sourced from a man-made canal system, they retain flowing water all year.

They’re also connected to Utah Lake and have no barriers in place to prevent upstream/downstream travel.

I catch some pretty mean browns in these creeks to, sometimes even rainbows. Fun stuff.

Dude I think you have caught just about all species from Utah Lake in that system except for maybe channel and bullhead catfish. I ride my motorcycle around that area quite a bit and I have seen you out fishing those creeks. Next time I’ll pull over and say “hey.” Nice pics and vids!

that’s awesome dude! You’re luck to behave something like that near your work…some1 ike me would be tempted to get “sick” on my lunch break lol. Could u see fish in them or did u just randomly think to try catching them in there?

You’re lucky that the wife didn’t drive off! LOL.

Although that would leave you more fishing time!

Well she can’t drive, so that’s out of the question. Besides, she needed me to pay for sushi tonight (it’s our anniversary).

I live in lindon and would love to fish these spots. If its a “secret” spot you don’t want to share feel free to pm me. If you want the spot to yourself (totally understandable) thats good with me. I just want to get some good fishing without traveling to far from home.

Well congrats! Am I the only one here that thinks it is ironic that you are eating fish tonight? Naw that just about figures right for you two.

Now I am sure you wish you could catch the sushi huh!

Weeeeellll now hold on there pardner! Did I just see Loah the master of the slimy-sleeve pulling up Bass?

bwaha. takes all kinds. You master of the ditch!

got a spot like that that’s loaded with green-sunfish, but they are all such ridiculous dinks - it ain’t funny!

My lunch spots are in the area between the dump, NOAH’s, and Sam White Lane.

Knowing where they are isn’t a guarantee though. You have to search for the holes where they collect.

Enjoy! Those silly whities will eat anything. I’ve said it before and one of these days I’ll actually do it: I’m going to tie some hooks onto a padlock and catch a white bass with it. Seriously. They’re that stupid.

TDT - We were discussing our 10th anniversary (hoping for a trip to Hawaii) and how we’d need to hire a sushi chef to come along on the boat.

The freshest sashimi on Earth sounds pretty good to me.:sunglasses:
