Hello, i live close to utah lake and im new to carp fishing, can anyone tell the best carp bait there is because i have heard worms, bread, boilies, and homemade recipes are the best bait for carp. can anyone tell me which is the best bait. And if you don’t mind I would love to know some bait recipes. Thank you

For all this talk about how many carp are in Utah Lake, I have yet to catch one there. I have used worms, shrimp and a couple other baits chasing kitties. Never a carp was caught. I hear that dough of some kind works best. Some kind of bread I imagine. I saw some carp dough at Cabelas the last time I was there, but I don’t know how well it works. Good luck dude, let me know what works for you. I would love to catch some, I hear the kitties go crazy for carp meat.
A fiberglass arrow shaft is the best way to catch them buggers,they dont have to bite just whack um with a sting-a-rey.
**Worms are not a good idea in my humble opinion. I spent hours on the lake last year with a worm under a bobber trying to get one. I would see them jumping all over but they never paid any attention to the worms. I spent alot of time using hot dogs for Channel Cats, didnt catch much of anything, not even channel cats (although some people do very well with them) I caught channel cats all day literally, just using minnows and they didnt seem to go for those either.
One day i did get some pieces of break, roll them into small balls that would just cover the hook, (just eagle claws from walmart with the small length of mono already attached) After you have a little doughball tightly compacted onto the hook just dip it in water briefly and let all your hooks covered in bread dry out so that theyre hard(ish) that way they wont fall off the hook. When theyre in the water they get moist again but they stay on the hook extremely well.
I used a bixed bobber with the line dangling about 2 feet below it ( if you use a slip bobber the catfish keep nailing it becuase its right on the bottom) Anyway i used that setup and caught 1 for the short time i tried it out. Just wanted to catch a carp.
I have used some of the dough balls from cabelas and they never worked for me, but maybe if you tried them you’d have more luck. Theyre fun to catch for sure. When i set the hook on it i thought for sure I had a snag instead of actually having a carp. I’ll have to try again soon.

While out with TD last week, the boat next to us caugh a big Carp with a worm…just never know.
I went out to UL last friday. Fishing was pretty slow. There were as usual pods of carp surfacing all over. I decided to cast my tandem jigs past them and reel in. Snagged several…I know it might be pushing the legalities, I really was hoping they would slurp one of the jigs…Most people that fish jigs at U.L have snagged a carp before and they will test your tackle if caught in the dorsal fin…Fun way to kill some time. They are strong…They dont call them golden bonefish for nothing

Use dough … bread balls, the frozen biscuit dough ( thawed) wheaties work great just moisten a hand full and make balls… carp have a sweet tooth , my favorite is muffins or doughnuts compacted on the hook in little balls … we have had some 50 fish mornings at Utah lake on doughnuts( glazed) 4lb line and an utralight rod go home with sore arms … use as little amount of weight as you can get away with I use no weight or a single split shot and a size 6-8 hook! Its easy as that … the marinas are always a good bet, also anywhere with clean bottom ( they find it quicker)
Night crawlers are one of the better baits. You need to get them up off the bottom, but a bobber tends to put them off due to the resistance. If you can learn to counter weight the bobber so it is neutrally buoyant, you will do better. Slim profile bobbers rather than the old red/white round ones will do better also. Use size 3/0 or BB split shot spaced 1-2 inches apart, above the hook so the bait falls slowly. You want the tip of the bobber just out of water as a strike indicator, but with as little resistance as possible. You will have to experiment till you find the correct number of shot to balance out the bobber.
Using a few split shot 8-12 inches up the line, then floating the worm with a bubble of air injected into it, will also do the trick.

well I was hoping that too…Just seemed that about every third cast one would find a way to get my jig in his fin or tail None were polite enough to eat my jig this trip but many have in the past.
I go for them at bear lake with my fly rod. now that’s,a fight. I use bread and ball it up best I can around a fly. then drop it like 3 feet down from a strike indicator and place it where you see bubbles coming up

Not done much carp fishing myself but have had great intentions tto do so. All the “experts” I’ve talked to said crayfish works well, real or immitation (fly).
I’ve caught carp on worms, but soaking on the bottom, not under a bobber. I have had them chase lures or spinner blades too. I do catch cats under a bobber.
You might check Youtube or Google for some dough recipes. Carp have real sensitive mouths, so it might help to cover your hook fully. I’ve watched them suck in a dough ball and spit it before I could even get a hookset. Plus they do spook and disperse an area quite easily.
One simple one I’ve heard - take a handful of cornflakes, dip them in water, and squish them into a ball. Couple drops of vanilla, form on a hook, and toss it in. Then get ready for a ride!
A 10lb carp on light tackle and 6lb test can be pretty entertaining. Those suckers just do NOT seem to tire out!

I also have 4lb in floro,but haven't used it for carp.I use this same hook for livebait,it usually ends up in the corner of the mouth[;)].I usually first try my 6lb suffix in green.P.S.I used these same hooks to make a 16" snake fly,I used 4 of these hooks,1 at the nose,2 in the body,and 1 at the tail. If you can find time to go to yuba you will catch dozens of them fast with worm on the bottom, i personally hate carp but they are every where on that lake and there easy to catch, try the sevier river as well catch a ton of big carp, as for utah lake i have not caught a carp since last year but it was with worm and it was 17 lbs

What about scent. A squirt of crawdad juice? Too much? Do natural hairs or feathers have scents that might draw fish? I often debate slapping a pinch of crawler on a spinner - wonder if it messes with the action . . . .
