Well i dedicated this week to learning a little about fishing the Bear. Finally I found the crappie I have been searching for all week. I found my spot with only an hour before I had to leave for work, but it yielded three very nice slabs and a 17" largemouth. I kept 2 of the crappie because I have never eaten them before and I tossed back the bass. Thanks to Coyote spinner for a little pm’ed advise. Now I know where they are, I am headed back tomorrow.

Nice work on the crappie! Glad to see you can pull them out of a river too. That LMB is a good size to me but to you I know it is a dink ha ha ha! Crappie taste sooooo good! Hey my twin (TyeDyeTwin) covered most of what I had to say already…but nice going on the Crappies. My twin has hooked into some this year at Willard Bay but I have yet to catch one. He holds that over my head everytime I catch a Tiger Muskie (up to 3 in under a week)…but at least my fish are bigger! That LMB at 17 inches is a bucket mouth for sure…but will never compare to my LMB friend “Mickey Big Mouth” that I was telling you about on the water. Were heading to the gorge this weekend for the 1st time…when we get back we’ll have to hook up (so we can get our stuff back) and maybe hook into some Tiger Muskies while were at it. May your lines go straight and that stringer be full my friend.
Well done - those DO qualify as Slabs I’d say. Did you measure them? I’d guess they’re better than footlongs. Glad anything I could offer helped any. Now you’ll have to remind me what I said so I can put it to use, too! Maybe sometime you can take me out on that fancy boat and show me how it’s done!
So you floated the Bear - nice. Certainly a lot of river out there to explore. May have mentioned - but I’ve found Mapquest, or Google maps real helpful to “explore” the river from the safety and comfort of your computer chair - can get an idea of where the bends are, where the flows are - where arms join into or flow out of back-sloughs and such. Course then ya gotta either find a back access or float on by to check’m out.
At 17" Largie - I wouldn’t count as a dink. They get bigger -yes, but the dinks in my book are the 3-4"ers that don’t know how to take a REAL bite!
I think one of the reason’s folks thing Crappie are so good tasting is because they aren’t a “fishy fish”. Simple flakey white flesh - quick to cook. I like to take it easy on the seasoning to let their own qualities come through. But you can’t go wrong with butter, lemon, and garlic.
