40in. yuba pike

 fished yuba today with Lloyde and a friend, we planed on walleye fishing and a few perch. the perch fishing was great and the walleye, well, things that make you go hmm when it comes to walleye. but the pike were pretty nice to me, I caught 3 pretty nice ones, the big one was a good 18lbs. and 40in. +. what a awesome strike it was, about 6 feet from the boat about 3 feet deep in the water, here comes my lure I look down just ready to pull it up a cast again and out of no where wham, my lure disapears and the rest is history. the other pike was about 9/10 and the small one was about 6/7. we casted rapalas around the weed beds in about 3 to 9 feet of water for the pike. the perch were in good numbers in 12 to 14 feet and the walleye, yea, we know. later chuck

Great catch! makes me want to hit yuba!

Very nice! I can’t even imagine what that would be like to catch something like that!

Great job!

Great Chuck, whats up with the Walleyes ?

That is one hefty Pike! Nice work. Too bad the eyes gave you the finger.

I think I had one walleye on for a second but came off, or it was a big perch. normally at this time of year the walleye are bitting pretty good, but sence the drain I haven’t caught one, but I haven’t fished it much lately.

Tanner & grandpa

Very nice fish! Thanks for sharing. I do have a question I hope you can help me answer. I was there a couple weeks ago doing basically the same thing; casting lures into cover. However, with all the submerged cover, I kept getting snagged and would have to navigate the boat around until I got unhooked. Do you have any suggestions to minimize the number of snags I get when fishing this way? Thanks in advance.

Way to gooo!! Man i wish i had some freee time to fish yuba! Have you lost that grin yet?

when I cast lures around that much brush I like a floating lure, that help with the snags. another thing is I don’t yank my lure thru the weeds I reel slow and bring the lure right up close to the bush and just wiggle my rod tip until the lure moves around the weeds. A spinner bait will go thru weeds real good without getting snagged. hope this helps. later chuck

I work a strange shift so I fish mostly on tuesdays, I work on weekends but I have every other sunday off. let me know if you and your grandpa can do a tuesday some time. later chuck

Great catch Chuck. With all of the discussion recently about the pike being so much smaller than the tiger muskies I don’t believe any of us would feel badly about catching a 40" pike.
