Willard again, with a little pain

Got out to Willard again yesterday, this time with my Son. It was my first time out this year in my boat. We fished the East run of the openness. We launched around 6:30 am to a water temp of 74 degrees.Took us an hour to find the fish, we did circles for the next two hours and stayed on them, catching our limits of eyes, up to 20" and three wipers up to 18". That’s when the pain happened, that big wiper decided to drive one of the hooks on the worm harness, into my sons hand, with the barb going all the way through. He was able to cut off the shank and pull the hook out with very little damage, just some pain. We were trolling at 1.4 to 1.7 mph, using worm harnesses and flicker shad, in green or purple. Other than the wind and the pain, it was a great day out on the water with my son.

Shad are starting to ball up

The pain part

Good day on the water with your son, nice catch! Unfortunate on the hook. Must who fish a lot have had that happen or been with someone who got hooked. I’ve pulled out or had pulled out more hooks on others and myself than you can imagine. Hopefully not much damage done.

Been there done that many times, some worse than others. A big catfish hook was one of my worst experiences. But they all fall in as OUWEES

Great report and a very sympathetic groan from me as well. I posted earlier this year that it happened to me at Willard as well, with a wiper attached. I’m glad you were able to get it out.

Not bad at all, once the hook was out, could hardly notice the hole once the hook was out.

That is so true, the worst time for me, was when I had a hook enter right at the edge of my fingernail.

Yea, wipers are the worst IMO, they thrash around so much, it’s a wonder it doesn’t happen more often, when catching them, plus they have some many pointed fins, it’s hard not to get a hole in your hand when catching them.

Sorry to hear about the hook in your son. It is a trip that you will remember forever. Nice job!

Thanks DB, I don’t get out with my son nearly enough, so I will for sure remember it.
