On the water at 4:00 pm, left the south marina followed the dike north towards freeway bay. Stopped about half way to decide what and where. 20’ of water and fish all over on the finder. Looks good to me! Drifted for 10 minutes with curly tail grubs near bottom and casting same and retrieving slow. My son in law, Jordan, yelled fish on! Retrieving a “bright” yellow “gulp” 3" curly tail grub, landed his first Wiper! 20" and 3 1/2 pounds. Nothing for a while, headed to freeway bay. After a dip in the lake to cool off, we started trolling. I do not have a trolling motor, I can go steady at about 2.0-2.3 mph. I think this is too fast, any comments would be appreciated. I started with a bottom bouncer pulling a walleye spinner bait tipped with worm. Jordan used the same only with a shad rapala. Snag, jordan lost his setup. Now he ties on a perch colored deep diver rapala. not the skinny type, the fat ones. Within 5 minutes, FISH on! His second wiper, 21" very fat at a full 4 lbs. He was in heaven! Nothing else all night. Except for me, I tied on the same rapala only in a rust/white color. All I caught was a plastic bag, and two seperate balls of fishing line that some idiot threw in the lake instead of the trash! Left the water at 9:oo. Good trip!

bottom bouncing that fast is to fast because you cant get that magic 45 degrees from tip of your pole to the bottom bouncer itself,thats why your son probably snaged up and lost his setup,he was dragging accross the bottom.
crankbaits, that is actually a good speed and even faster up to 4mph to get reaction strikes from the wipers,one thing you will learn is wiper laike to hit fast moving baits.

Thanks for the feedback! I might try again next sunday afternoon. I’ve got a tee time[;)] up north and might bring the boat and do it again. After all…We are almost there anyway!
Do you reccomend “deep” divers, shallow, or lipless cranks for wipers?
Last time I was at Willard I trolled with my 90HP at 2.3-2.5-2.7 all day and we did very good… I bet that kid wont let you go fishing alone again…
I will use my main motor quite a bit for wipers. 2.8-3.1 is as slow as i can go, but like Fishinfool said up to 4mph for wipers ! Just remember to have your pole in a good rod holder or you will loose it!![;)]
Words of wisdom there. I lost a pole to a wiper.Never again. LOL
Depends on there mood.with all the shad who knows,try lipless out on planners and deep divers out the back.
My trolling days are over for the rest of the year I catch more casting to shore or cover now. there in ambush mod big time. Look for boils and fish the area even if the boil ends before you get to it,there will still be fish there picking up the wounded shad.
