This topic came up last weekend, so I came home and read up.
Idaho allows 5 (five) hooks/lures/flies on one line. And by Lures, this means ONE lure with multi hooks like a Rapala, is still counted as ONE LURE.
So why don’t more fish all five?

For me it comes down to Tangles FG. Ive fished 3 flys a few times and that is pushing it.
That is my excuse to and I am sticking to it…LOL I only fish two because that is all we can in Utah, and I kick myself now realizing I can fish more. Specially deep nymphing.

The standard Czech Nymph set-up for river fishing uses a three Nymph system. The fly with the most weight goes in the middle the next as the droper and the lightest at the point fly. I can’t do it becuse it always ends in a giant ball of stuff at the end of my line. I’ll stick to two flys. Can see the advantage in deep water slip bobber fishing. i’m all over that! Czech Nymphing
Hi Flygoddess!
I have to agree with the others and go with tangles. If I have to cast a rig with more that one fly, lure, whatever I and sure to get all tangled up!
Definitely not an overhead cast…roll casting is not too bad.
Fly fishing I’ve done 2 fly’s. Ice fishing I routinely use a jig or paddle bug under a kastmaster or crocodile spoon. I’ve tried multiple setups bottom bouncing but always seen to tangle, although I’ve seen people use up to 5 flies, but they use a very stout line that sticks straight out from the mainline and is usually only about 6 inches long.
deep nymphing on a lake at 20+ i have used three chronomids about 14" apart tying off by the bend of the hook…casting is tricky but possible…i dont now if roll casting would help…

I think that is the key.
i have used a 5 hook set up below the damn at palasades… i used it lost it… wont again… to many tangles. if your buying to flies it can get pricy also
