What's your preferred eats for fishing?

Definitely need to stay hydrated. It can get dangerous out there if we don’t.

If I have them made up (in the morning) its a home made egg McMuffin othewise it’s granola bars.

Asiago cheese and large seedless red grapes. Usually a turkey or ham sandwich. Apples, plums string cheese it just depends on what’s at home the night before that I make.

Bottled water sometimes a coke.

Pringles, Powerade and some good meat sandwich made with plenty-o-cheese. On the way home if I’m driving is one of the few times I take Stay Alert and drink an energy drink. Better having the shakes for a bit than crashing the rig.

Organic baked sweet potatoes, organic dole bananas, organic blue corn tortilla chips with organic salsa. Usually don’t have time to eat while fishing but as soon as I get back to the car, it’s chow time.

LOL Spam huh? haha. No more processed meats of any kind for me, unless it is uncured, organic and nitrate and nitrite free.

I’m now stuck singing the Python Spammity Spam song, thank you very much! Ah, parts is parts they say.

I do like taking some smoked fish, for inspiration, also if I have a fishing mate, to share some of what we COULD enjoy from our outing. Salmon, catfish.

commonly pick up a gut bomb egg-muffin-sausage sammich on the drive out, if it’s an AM trip. Crackers for nibbling. Orange/apple. If I’m organized a basic sandwich, though I have yet to try your spam/jalapeno treat.

usually try to keep it simple, as my hands are messy, and usually too busy with fish or boat business. Always pack a big bottle of water, and usually a gatorade. Maybe throw down a soda or matured barley pop with lunch. Know some folks that swear by their spitz, especially on ice. Can usually tell where their tent has been!

Got o’ recipe for your pickled peppers? I got your other one, but that’s other peppers wasn’t it?

They sure are purdy! Just packed a peck tonight.

Got o’ recipe for your pickled peppers?

Yup … I’ve attach here it for ya.

Man, I just love those home pickled jalapeno peppers. Nothing in the store comes even close to their flavor and crispness.

That bottle in your picture sure looks good.

SPAM is an acronym for shoulder pork and ham. Also it makes me think of the Wierd Al song SPAM.

Thanks Ralph. I’ll have to try your recipe, though I may have to scale down a wee…didn’t have onions or bay-leaves in mine, but don’t know why not!

The one I tried boiled the brine, then tossed in the peppers as the heat went off. Still seemed plenty hot.
Don’t know about “mixing with one hand” - I like to use a spoon on boiling liquids, personally. Your heat tolerance may vary…

For those youngling’s who’ve never seen a Python, can’t help but share: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anwy2MPT5RE

You sure SPAM doesn’t stand for “Scientifically Processed Animal Matter”? Hear tell…maybe spice and ham? History of Spam

For all we know if could be “squirrels, possums and mice” !!!
Had a coworker who enjoyed his hot dogs. Wife would deliver dinner. Another coworker enjoyed touting it was all “pigs lips and asses”.
When I came across an article on an Asian offering of bleached pig anus- muscle. I had to wonder.

I think I need to go shopping! I do love a picnic pork-shoulder, smoked - makes a GREAT pulled pork!

Right now I’m making Salsa Verde. It’s GREEN. I’ll say no more!

Saw a thing on the history channel. An employee of hormell came up with it. So the actual acronym is shoulder pork and ham. Leftovers from making their canned hams. This was a major good staple for the troops during WWII.

What’s your salsa verde recipe?

Ahh Coyote, you make me laugh in so many ways. LOL That was good.

Glad for that, but I was actually quoting tidbits from that history article I linked. I believe their bottom line was “spiced ham”.
Do ya’ll realize the Python skit originated the internet term Spam? It’s referenced in there too. Talk about funny!

As for the Verde Kory, can’t give you exact measures, because, well - I don’t have them. Plus each batch is “unique”. First year growing Tomatillos, and wow - they produce! Don’t have a fancy PDF, maybe I should make one. *(ok, made a word doc)

[inline “Green Salsa and Chips - 400.jpg”]

Big bowl of Tomatillos, peel the husks, wash
chop some onions, yellow or white, or both
chop some garlic cloves. big ones!
put that in a pot on some heat. Add a cup or two of water. Have found the tomatillos release a lot of juice, so been trying to pare down the added water.

Chop a handful of fresh oregano maybe some thyme, turn it in
add a tablescoop of sea salt, maybe some sugar
a dash of cumin, bit of chili powder too.
chop some cilantro, but don’t add it till the end

Peppers: ahead of time, roast some sweet green bells on the grill, peel the blackened skin. Deseed.
chopped up fresh hot peppers. I have a mix of jalapeno, chili, and anaheims.

Let this heat and steep for quite some time. Gotta turn in the tomatillos at first to get them all wilty. I let the onions soften all the way down. I hit it with high heat at first, then down to low.

Just before turning off the heat, add most of the cilantro, and a cup of vinegar. Cider, white wine, rice, white - mix of any/all. Then add the last cilantro and turn off the heat. A spritz of lemon juice can be ok too.
One batch I heaped in some spoonfuls of horseradish after the heating. The root kind, not the creamy stuff.

Let it cool some, then blend. I blend the whole batch into another bowl, stir and THEN decant to jars for canning. End up with 5-6 pint jars.

I usually have a hot lunch while fishing, even aboard my kayak. In recent trips, I’ve enjoyed Meatball Marinara, Chili-Mac, Pork Patty, Chicken w/egg noodles, Beef Taco, Chicken Fajita, and Mexican-Stye Chicken Stew. All courtesy of the US Goobermint as MREs. The included flameless ration heaters make hot meals possible.

A typical meal begins with cheese and crackers while the entree heats, then the main dish and sometimes a side dish like garlic mashed potatoes, Mexican rice, or stuffing. Dessert can be a candy bar, pastry, pudding, or even a milk shake. Also, there are snacks like pretzels, dried fruit or jerky strips in every pack. Plus a drink mix. I seldom can eat it all.

Wow nice tortilla chip platter! So looks like we are all invited to a salsa party hahahaha. Make sure you start getting organic tortilla chips, those gmo corn chips have done a number on me already. Pretty cheap deal at Costco, they have giant bags of organic corn chips. I’m glad I don’t have to go to whole foods for everything, I grow my own apples, peaches, and dozens of different kinds of vegetables.. Good job with the tomatillos, will have to try them next summer.

I MUST have my thermos of Postum (glad they are making it again), crunchy (not chewy) granola bars, and my homemade goose jerky. Oh, and I’m another one of those firm believers of NO bananas on my boat!

They are making Postum again? I had just fell in love with that stuff just when it went out of production. I know that, for most avid coffee drinkers, Postum tastes more like rectum, but I sure do like it (Postum). But then again, I like Spam sandwiches too.
