caught about 15 inch trout and this is one of the fish that was in the belly. what is it? and where were we at?

Well if not a chub it could be a shad. Which yould mean willard.

The trout in that lake dine well on young crappie under the ice.
east canyon is not right. have not heard of anyone getting a crappie out of this lake.

The body shape, large eyes, and mottled fins are those of a crappie.
To my knowledge, we don’t have pumpkinseeds in Utah. At least northern Utah. We have bluegill sunfish and green sunfish.
They look like baby bluegills to me, with the color washed out by stomach acid.
im not sure if its crappie havent heard of them being there it looks like some bluegill i use to catch at deer creek way back in the day
looks like there is one more type of panfish in deer creek res. have caught pumkinseed in the res. before. here is a pic of both.

I used to catch crappie by the hundreds at EC. Year before last, tiger trout were introduced and almost completely wiped them out They’re still in there but it will take a while before they are back in large numbers. The fish in question is, however, a small crappie that was born last spring.
The small fish in your picture is DEFINITELY a crappie.
I seriously doubt that you caught a “pumpkinseed” from Deer Creek. I suspect that it was a green sunfish. They are brightly colored and can be mistaken for any one of several other species of sunfish. See picture.
I was a volunteer the night the DWR shocked 4 shorelines at DC last summer. Mucho little crappie came from the brushy shallows. Made a believer out of me.

Have heard several credible reports of small crappies, and a couple of larger ones. They will be still another predator sucking up the baby perch and holding down the perch population. But, as evidenced by the post and picture, they will also be providing a source of protein to other predators. I am sure the walleyes and browns like them too.
I stand corrected. I have heard that crappie were in DC but never seen one.
