What to do if you fall through the ice

Here is the best info on falling through the ice. Before this I thought going in the drink was close to a death sentence. I have every one that I take on the hard deck fishing watch it. I wanted to share it and hopefully keep others safe. I look forward to giving update and reports later. I’ll be punching holes in Scofield Monday.

This thermo physicist puts his money were his mouth is and he purposefully goes through the ice.

I have seen that video several times before. It is interesting and very informative. Thanks for bringing it up again.

Great video. Very nice information should the worst case scenario happen.

That’s a great video. Key is don’t panic!

I’m thinnin having a rope and throwable float will be key.

Of course you don’t have to beg for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3N04Z3W4uc either.

Thanks for the education

:sunglasses:Thanks for putting this up. I never feel comfortable on the ice until I check everything off my mental safety checklist. Also watched some other videos of goofballs bouncing around on thin ice jeez[crazy][:p]

Plus, it’s a good idea to have a wood slat at the end of your rope - so that it makes a “T” at the end. That way the person with wet and cold fingers doesn’t have to grasp on to something as thin as a rope, and can be pulled out with less effort on their part.

One piece of my safety gear is my throw bag. You can spend $50 on one that is made for rafting, or go cheap. I have a stuff bag and nylon rope or webbing, 40 feet (slides well). I got a foot of a pool noodle, (makes the whole bag float) and fed the rope through it, then tie a loop big enough to fit easily over someone, around their torso. You feed that into the bag first and “stack” or lay the rest on top of it. On the end I tie a small loop and attach a carabiner, it sticks out of the bag and I attach it to the rope one my sled. It is always on top. Test it out, you may need to add a small amount of weight to the bag to get it to throw well.

The pad for my bucket is also a PFD for boating.
