3 of us went to Starvation yesterday. Caught one great rainbow. When cleaning it the stomach was full of the same type of insects. They had a head and mid body like an ant but a rear end like a wasp. long narrow wings and they were black with white markings on the top of the tail. What kind of insect were they? Can any one help

Rule of thumb,
Wings pointing up like the sails of a boat= Mayfly
Wings fold to look like a tent= Caddis
Wings folded over top of one another= Stonefly
There are many species of each that come in several colors and multiple sizes.
This guys website can probably help you identify the insect. Bring ur phone to a picture or a collection bottle which are cheap at sportsmans and those places. and so u could post an image so everyone could look.
**Maybe flying ants? The new queens and drones go on their first mating flight as soon as the warm weather kicks in.

When the wife saw it that’s exactly what she called it. A flying ant. The fish’s gut was packed so full I cant believe it could even think about eating.
I’m not much of a phone or camera guy or I would of had a picture. That would of been so much better.
They might be chironomids (large, lake-dwelling midges)… they hatch all season long from ice out to ice up… makes up about 50% of the trout’s diet until the water temps get into the 50s.

These or ants are most likely because of them being in still water. Most Stoneflies live in fast moving water.
After reviewing some pic’s of flying ants I’m all most certain that as TubeDude said they are flying ants. There had to be a whole bunch because that old boy was stuffed full of them.
