hi all. i am new to this forum. i just started fishing with my kids in our lake and my daughter caught the fish that is in my member pic. i have never seen this before and would appreciate if anyone can tell me what it is. we have a lot of bass and catfish but that is all we have seen. i was wondering if it was a different kind of catfish.
That is one ugly critter, never heard of it , like I said it has been a long time since I caught a dog fish . Im glad someone was able to identiy this fish looks like a trash fish
my misteak guys..what ive always called a dod fish is acctually a burbot…a dog fish is actually a member of the shark family..heres a pic of a bubot..this is what we call a dog fish..i hope this clears up the misunderstanding..
that is a big algae eater out of and aquarium. Go look at any pet store and see how much they look alike. i have one in mine that looks identical, just smaller. That is not a native fish, someone put that in your pond. just my 2 cents.
Yes, as someone said already, that is an armored catfish, and smaller specimens (starting at 1 or 2 inches in length) are very common in the aquarium trade. Among fishkeepers, it’s called a plecostomus, or “pleco” for short. It’s a freshwater tropical fish from Central and South America and commonly kept for its algae-eating ability. They grow steadily and get rough and aggressive as they get larger, and my guess is that its old owner tossed him into that lake when the fish just got too out of hand for his indoor tank. In outdoor conditions, they’ll reach sizes of up to two feet. Reminds me of the non-native “oscars” (South American cichlid) that you might find in some Florida waters - also an unwanted transplant from fishkeepers’ tanks.
LOL,I caught one by hand while snorkeling in the lake, got him in the pond now, been trying to get one swimming for sometime,I got him sort of cornered of under a rock[;)]
sucker fish,or algea eaters.Snagged it?
