I thought this one would be interesting because I have used some this year and liked them. I Have targeted quite a few fish including Trout, Strippers, LMB SMB and whiskers. I Bought the Pro-Cure super gels in Garlic, Crawfish, Rainbow trout and thread fin shad. What do you guys like and use???

We have had a lot of past discussions about attractants on the board. If you use the SEARCH function, and put in the word attractants…for all Utah forums…you will get 3 pages of past posts…64 POSTS (LINK).
That being said, there is obviously a wide range of opinions about 1. Whether attractants really work and 2. Which ones work best.
**Most of us agree that using some type of attractant helps in two ways…by making human odor and by adding more more trigger to a fish’s strike response. **
Pro Cure products are great. So is Smelly Jelly and most of the other scent products on the market. But, none of them will make you a better angler if you don’t already have some basic fishing skills.
I have probably tried just about every kind of liquid, oil, paste, gel or other attractant goop on the market, at one time or another. My opinion is that some of them definitely have a specific spot in some tackle arsenals. Others are just over advertised and overpriced fisherman attractants.
Obviously, not all scents work the same on all species on all waters. And, as water chemistry, biological functions and food sources change in specific species and/or specific waters throughout the year, the effectiveness of some scents can change too. What worked well last week (or yesterday) might not work worth a hoot today.
What do I use? I carry two kinds of scent on most tubing trips…shad scent and crawdad scent…in some of the least expensive oils you can buy…$4.99 for a large plastic bottle. I use the crawdad far more often than the shad scent, but on some trips they both seem to work equally well.
**I also occasionally use anchovy or sardine scent, and I have heard good reports on the corn scent for kokanee and other species. **
WD-40 is still used by some “anglers”, but should not be in your tackle box except for use on reels and rusty pliers. It contains petroleum distillates that are both poisonous to fish and harmful to the environment. Sure, it has an attractive scent for fish…mostly stupid hatchery pet rainbows…but there are plenty of other things that will catch those foolish fish.
My suggestion is to try new things as they come out. Give them a fair side by side test…both with unscented lures and with the same lures scented with both the new product and with others you already know and trust. There are a lot of variables in fishing, but you should be able to form your own opinion after a few fair trials. If it works, it is worth what you paid for it. If it doesn’t, then toss it. Otherwise you will end up with shelves full of stuff you never use anymore…like I have.
minnows do it for me on most day’s. thats all the attractant ya need.. if you put anything else on ya cover the minnow smell..
