weather paterns for ice fishing

once the ice has capped off a lake, do low presher fronts and storms effect the fishing like it does with soft water. Does the ice fishing stink if it is snowing?

I can’t speak for all bodies of water, but I have had experience fishing Strawberry and some other reservoirs in a heavy snowstorm and the catching has been great. If one is not in an ice tent that snow falling and melting will wet one to the bone.

I have caught many fish through the ice in an out right blizzard. I have not kept track but it seems that I do better when there is a cloud cover. However, finding where the fish are in the water column and presentation seem to have the most to do with a successful outing.

I always seem to do well on Scofield in a blizzard. If I can barley see my pole I seem to have a lot of action. Sucks driving to the lake and home but great on the ice.

I haven’t been in enough snow storms when ice fishing to make out some kind of pattern, but I tell you what I have noticed a few things.

What I like best is when the ice looks like a “checker board.” When there are patches of snow and then clear ice. And, add to this some good cloud cover. I guess that way the fish cant see the shadows and probably cant detect you walking and making noise on the ice when there is some snow here and there. That is what I make of it.
