Washington and Trial Lake 11/16/08

The wife and I decide to spend our sunday communing with nature in the cathedral of the uintahs. What a great place to be on such a beautiful day!! Air temp was 43* when we got to Washington Lake at 11 am. We fished there til about 2:30. We caught several rainbows (brought home 3 about 10" for the smoker) and a couple little brookies.

Then we moved over to Trial where we met Hell’s Angler. He was on fire–in the 10 minutes I was talking to him he pulled 5 or 6 little brookies thru the ice.

The action was a lot quicker for us on Trial as well. We spent a little over an hour and reeled in about 20 little guys–brookies and bows.

We came a lot more prepared today for the small fish thanks to all the tips you guys gave me on my earlier post.

The brook trout in your pictures are really tiger trout.

Tigers for sure nice report and pretty fish Randy is a great guy to (hellsangler)

Using small baits through the ice isn’t unique to the Unitas. It works when other things wont.

You didn’t touch Hellsangler69 did you? If so, see a doctor on Monday!

Hey nice little tiger trout! Good to see you were able to have a good trip.

Just FYI I’m putting a couple pictures up so you can see the difference. Brook trout generally have delicate vermiculations across the back, and yellow and blue spots on a dark background. Tiger trout, which are brook trout and brown trout hybrids vary alot from fish to fish, but have pronounced vermiculations that give them a tiger-like pattern and often have an overall orange hue. Some are really pale, others are incredibly bright.

Also, the small lures and baits you used often work equally well for trout up to several pounds. In winter many fish like their food to be small.

Thanks for the corrections–I’ve spent most of my fishing days just chasing rainbows and splake. I’ll take all the education and knowledge I can get!!
I have never actually caught a brook or tiger until this past weekend–hence my mis-labeling.

Last winter we did quite well at Fish Lake using 3" Tube Jigs in Glow, tipped with a meal worm and berkely trout attractant–but we were chasing/catching 18-22" rainbows and splake.

The hard deck came fast - I tubed Washington 10/31 and caught a lot of fish. There was ice near the edges in the morning, but it blew off in the afternoon. That water was cold! But the fish didn’t mind.

If you don’t mind me asking I am interested in what you were using… I am thinking about heading up there this weekend
Also, how thick was the ice?

Thanks,
Hope

The ice was about 4" thick. Trial felt pretty solid, but there were a couple places on washington that got a little slushy on top in the afternoon.

It seemed like they were interested in just about anything.

I caught one rainbow on a 1" glow tube jig, one on a fake worm. And we were catching most of the rest on some little ice jigs that looked like ants that we got at sportsmen’s tipped with part of a mealworm. Hellsangler was using white or pink ratfinkees that he got at sportsmen’s and he seemed to be doing quite well (maybe I shouldn’t be giving away his secrets)
