I’ve never fished for or eaten walleye. I’ve heard they are good to eat and would like to take my daughters (4 & 6) out to try for them. I live in Richfield. Is Yuba the only place nearby that holds walleye? Can walleye be caught from shore? Could anyone point me to the basics?
Thanks
Yuba is the closest to Richfield. There are not very many walleye in Yuba though. They are tough to catch, even tougher from shore. Your best bets for walleye in Utah are Starvation, Lake Powell, Utah Lake and Willard Bay. Perch (to me at least) taste almost identical to walleye. You have some good Perch fishing right in your area- Yuba, Fish Lake, Mill Meadow. They are much easier to catch, especially from shore. Any kind of small plastic tipped with nightcrawler slowly retrieved along the bottom works well.
You do not know what your missing till you have tryed Walleye. the best eating fish in my opinion. Willard deep trolling is the best way to catch them.
A hundred years ago or so, when I fished Nebraska waters alot, we caught walleye from shore using the weight on bottom and two hooks above method. (Called the African American method there, or something like that) We would catch limits of walleye, channels, white bass, or perch…whatever happened to be swimming by at the time. We would use a LIVE MINNOW(not applicable in Utah) and a worm. We would have 8 poles out (4 of us fishing) and it was TUFF to keep them all out.
Now for the Utah version… I lived in Delta about 50 years ago (really only 15-20 but who’s counting) and fished Yuba ALOT!! Haven’t been there much since they SCREWED it up by draining it. You could catch walleye, perch, and ALOT of CARP using this method. Lemme tell you…your girls get a huge carp on the line and they won’t CARE if you’re not going to eat it…they’re FUN!! It’s easier to NOT catch carp out of a boat there for some reason, but if you fish with the weight on the bottom type thing I described…use a split shot to hold the weight on, that way if ya hang a weed or rock…all ya lose is the weight. Oh and one other thing…fish with a tight line…that way if ya get a bite they pretty much hook themselves. Tall pole holders are almost a needed feature also… but short ones will work. Hope this helps…and it works EVERYWHERE I’ve tried it…not just Yuba.
