Fished the September Bass Yakkers tourney. 4 of us showed up. Non stop rain was the reason for that. Launched from the Snow Hill boat ramp around 7. Im not very familiar with Savannah Bay so I started searching some blow downs in small coves, with a black spinner bait, while on my way to the back. After about 30 minutes, on the edge of an eddy, my spinnerbait gets crushed and starts to pull me as I set the hook. Thought I was starting things off right since I got skunked in the last tourney in August. Turned out to be about a 5lb drum. That got my blood flowing and I saw some floating patches of grass further off the bank. So i paddled over and on my first cast, as I bring it up to the first patch of grass, my line starts running into the grass and it turned out to be the big fish of the tourney at 17.5". I worked every side and angle of the 4 or 5 patches of floating grass throwing a black spinner bait and flipping a black and blue jig. Did that for about an hour with a couple shorts and I missed 2-3.
Then it REALLY STARTED RAINING!!! If you know Savannah Bay, I was about 3/4 of the way back and to the right, if you are looking left from the boat ramp. Not being familiar with the area and not seeing any shelter, I decided to head back to hide under the Snow Hill bridge. This was against the current, wind, and rain. It took me what felt like an hour, but was probably 30 minutes. And as soon as I get to the bridge the rain slows down some.
So I crossed over to the other side of the bridge to fish for the last hour or so. I've never been that way so I wanted to work the area really good to the right once you pass under the bridge, instead of paddling and working docks. Caught a couple more shorts on a white spinnerbait. There is about 5-10 minutes left, I only have 1 keeper, and everyone is fishing close the ramp because we are pretty much done. I see Corey (BassmanIU) fishing by the bridge about 100 or so yards in front of me. My white spinnerbait gets slammed and I know I have a decent fish. As I get her close I see the spinnerbait straightening out and it looks like it might break if I fight this fish for too long. So my heart is pounding and I'm trying to get my net and not let her jump. I landed her and she was 15".
Ended up in 2nd with 32.5" and won big fish with 17.5". This is my second tourney and I was blanked in the first one. The pressure I felt when landing that last fish was so much fun. MAN I LOVE FISHING!!!
