Don’t know if they’re referring to it the same way i heard–“it’s just another … rock”
(sorry if that was inappropriate)
Why are they called sex stones?
You know sometimes it better just to leave certain questions unanswered!!!![]()

Watch for ice chunks breaking off in the big lake and setting you and your gear a drift, my brother-in-law and his buddies were on a chunk of ice that seperated from the shore a few years back and were lucky they were spotted by a passer by who went for help (before cell phones) and they had to be rescued by hover craft.[fishin]
Ya know… this trip is starting to sound like a bad idea.
Like I said, I want to hit bird island, is that sort of thing just not done? Am I setting myself up for danger, or are you guys just giveing me a heads up?
Excited to hear the results…waiting…waiting…
fuzzy made it out to bird island just last week. On a snowmobile with a second rider on it. (Judging from his post)
My brother-in law and his buddies were fishing off Lincoln Beach when the chunk broke off, but there was open water between them and Bird Island that year and they ended up floating that direction and If I recall were on 6 to 8 inches of ice, they made the news that night as several news teams were there watching the rescue, I’m sure some members on this site remember the incident. We were just glad it didn’t turn out with tragic results. You hear of that happening on the Great Lakes once in awhile but not out here. Good Luck on your outing and be careful especially with a heavy machine. I have a friend here at work that left one at the bottom of Flaming Gorge with a sled and lots of fishing gear years ago.[fishin]
hey man no worry’s on getting to the island! we made it out a week ago on 2 snowmobiles no problem!! ice was 6 to 8 inch’s solid!! [sly] go give it a try..
I “targot” eye at UL during ice season as much as anyone I suppose and have for more years than I’d care to admit. And when I do I never start fishing for eye before 4.30pm. That being said, I might spend the day on the ice poking holes for other species but poke my holes for eyes by 2.30 - 3 pm and never apporch the holes for eye until 4.30 or afterwards. Yes I have made a few runs to the island for eye and I have caught eyes there. But the Island is far from the best place to target eyes this time of year at UL. While I have caught eye at the island, I have never caught a hen there during te ice season.
One thing to remember is “think out side the box” this time of year as far as UL and eye goes. UL has 0 deep water stucture. At best right now its deepest spot probably isnt deeper than 12-14’. The fish are in pre-spawn and staging, but feeding. Their not simply attaching te lure to drive it away from their spawning bed as I believe they do during the spawn. So go repared to “feed” the fish.. And due to the water conditions remember two things, Vibration, and sight. That should put you in the ball park as far as fishing UL through the ice “at night” for eye..
BTW, yes its a game of long cold hours with very little to show for your efforts at times. I usually leave the ice by 10, but have been known to make it an all nighter..
Ron,
Your post makes me feel a whole lot better. Thank you. Knowing that someone else has gone out to the island on a sled already is a ray of hope that I will live through this trip… LOL
I’ve fished the south side of Utah Lake for six years now, around the lincoln beach area, which would probably be the best spot to take off from to get to bird island, and I’ve never seen anyone out that far in the lake. I don’t know why though, it looks pretty solid all the way out there and I’ve never seen open water that forms between the island and lincoln beach boat ramp to indicate a warm spring. I guess there’s just not many people that want to find out if they can go out there without any problems. For me, I just don’t have a snow mobile and it’s a long ways to walk, but you can see the island from the lincoln beach boat launch and the ice over there is atleast 8 inches out as far as i’ve walked.
Just follow my tracks out the harbor, you’ll be fine. Word to the wise tho, dont get lost in the fog if you stay late. You might end up at the L upon your return.. [crazy]

Thanks for the advice, I will have my GPS so I should be able to find my way back the exact same way that I use to get out there.
It does look like I have to pospone my trip until thursday or even friday morning though. Some things came up at work and I need to go testify in court for a couple of guys I arested a few weeks ago, so that puts a damper on the trip.
Well I finshed work today so this big adventure ut UL will happen in the morning…
Wish me luck
I think im going to be heading out to UL this weekend. I have never ice fished utah lake, and only like 3 times in my life ive fished it in the summer. But i’ve only caught one fish from that lake 1 white bass. and i will be at the saratoga area. I have no idea how to catch fish in this lake because i usually only ice fish trout. But i am wondering how to ice anything there. I mostly want to try for catfish or crappies. I have never caught a crappie before and I would like to catch alot. I guess the only way how to fish those is to find them. But would the best fishing be by shore where there is vegetation? or would it be better out there. But i dont plan on going out far on the lake. probably just stay near the shore since i hear that saratoga has springs everywhere. But has anyone tried it in that area, and how is the ice up there?
and good luck tomorrow and catching walleyes im anxious to hear how that goes. I’ve have never caught a walleye and I would love to catch one of those. I’ve been trying at deer creek and starvation but have never had any luck.
here’s a pic of a real nice sex stone I caught a few years ago while fishing for walleye at utah lake. we get at least one of these guys every year.
Gosh- looks like one of those things left behind by a dog! I’ll never look at Lincoln Beach the same way again LOL.
