Iced Utah Lake Walleyes

Anyone go after the Wall E’s at Utah Lake. I would really like to spend some time on the ice this year going after them. It seems to me that everyone I talk to has the same feeling about fishing walleye in Utah Lake. That is, the only time people really like to or believe they can catch them is in the spring. Most people say " don’t waste your time." after spending night after night after night chasing them in Utah Lake I’m starting to kindly feel the same way. Although, something in me keeps saying " go back, there have to be some big trophy sized fish in there." No one really is every pulling anything out except for in the spring and a bit in the fall. Everyone who fishes there when its iced says they rarely pullout a walleye. Has the population declined? I’m hoping that the carp removal with help the walleye population and that Utah Lake becomes a good place to fish for walleye.

Anyone interested in going after them? I’ve got a new 48’’ fish light I would like to go try out there one of these nights!!! I would be happy to team up and hit it! P.M me if your interested or have any thoughts. Thanks!

Saturday I watced a guy fight one for a while. He got the head to the hole then broke it off, didn’t let it wear out. But Walleye are not a common to see. This was just a lucky catch on a sonar.

I have caught them through the ice at Lincoln Beach in less than 2 feet of water. Only problem was they were less than 12 inches long, but at least they were walleyes.

lincon is your best bet. fish inside by the boat ramp for small eyes.[;)]

Inside the ramp penisula? If you catch em’ there small, you would think that you could catch em’ there big? I just want to catch some Wall E’s and I’ll be happy! Thanks for the posts!!!

I Talked with a guy last year that said he could consistantly catch walleye out of UL through the ice. He fished somewhere near Lincoln Beach. He said you had fish on the nights where the moon was full & no clouds. You had to drill your holes 1 hour prior to sunset & then insulate them. Drilling holes after dark or while fishing would scare the fish off. You had to be as quiet as you could possibly be. He would then fish after dark, in the dark. He would have some phenomial nights of fishing 20+ fish. I believe he fished with minnows.

yep. inside. about 40yrd out from ramp. its only about 3 to 5 ft deep. set the hook and they fly right out of the whole. best size for eating is the dinks anyways.[;)]

Now I’m all pyched up!! Who’s up for some Wall E fishing?? Redemption time!! After all those nights getting skunked this summer. Seriously, I probably put at least 2 nights in 4-6 hours each a week all spring, summer and fall chasing them out at U.L. Not a ton of success, but was still super fun fishing for them. Getting them makes it all worth while!! Anyone in for a night of walleye’s down on U.L. I seriously am tempted to get down there tonight and go after them. So you say that you use minnow? On a jig, spoon or plain on jig head? I’m planning on taking my big 48’’ inch fish light and seeing how they respond.

lololmao… i always do best on eyes from sun up till 3 pm in summer. the night bite is durring pre spawn for the most part by the light poles and jettys. and as far as ice eyes all mine have come durring daylight as well. jigging rapalas and sweadish pimples tipped with waxie or a minnow head.[;)]

Daylight it is, I agree. Utah lake walleyes hit easily in daylight. The water is murky, they feed effectively in the day. No need to freeze yourself to death in the night. Don’t bother to go after them though…it’s boooooring.[;)] Spawn or during a crash cycles are the peak times.

Best walleye fishing I ever had was christmas eve a few years ago. Me and two buddies fished all night and caught 44 walleye. The biggest one on the ice was just over nine pounds. One bigger was hooked, but we couldn’t get it through the hole. All were caught on Sonar blade baits. That was during the drought at the first warm spring by Lincoln beach. We drilled about six holes before sundown and they came through in schools all night. It was common for all three of us to be fighting a fish at the same time, then nothing for a while.
Walleye are hard to find under the ice with the high water. But they are very catchable if you find that majic spot.

Bob, I remember you telling me about that night, you guys found that sweet little path thru the rocks. me and my daughter found that same path and did real good also. I’ve never done good in the dark at UL but I’ve only fished the dark once or twice. I like DC in the dark.
later chuck

they are very catchable if you find that majic spot.

Yep

And I wish we were still in a drough as far as icing eye’s because I cant seem to find those real good magic spots to often sense the drough ended.

i remember you told us about that night. we hit it a few days later. have you been over to fish it yet this yr? its been a few yrs since you chuck and me fished eyes together. lets do a trip. ken[;)]

I fished at Provo boat harbor a couple days ago for a few minutes. Not a bite. I’ve been too busy hunting Elk.Shot my Elk Tuesday, so now I will have some time. We should plan a trip to Starvation in the next couple weeks. I’m sure I will be unemployed bye next week and have plenty of time to play.
