So I was reading through this years proclamation specifically looking for the closure window for utah lake tributaries. When I read it I thought, oh they have changed the wording some. I had thought it had another sentence or two that defined that once you got to say the provo harbor state park that the portion of the river inside the state park was open. So I downloaded the 2010 and 2009 proclamations and nothing there either. So I’m left wondering where I got that idea in my head.
Anyone know if there is any formal information saying where the cutoff for the river closure ends? What I’m after is a couple of us are thinking of making an early spring tube tripe to Utah Lake and thought we would launch at the provo harbor on the south side of the dikes into the river where there is the small boat launch which is about the same point as the road between the inner and outer harbor. What I don’t want to do is find myself in hot water for “fishing” a closed river. Thanks in advance!
Page 28. I think that means the Center Street bridge is the cutoff and that everything downstream of that is considered Utah Lake. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s what I thought.
The Provo is open for a good 1/4 mile upstream to Center street bridge. Don’t get your hopes up, haven’t caught a walleye in that stretch since the drought years and before that. For some reason in the last few years they just run right past that entire area and end up in the stupid closed area. Launch there all you want and fish all you want but chances are slim. The will charge up that river during some wee hours probably, when no one’s theres.
Thanks! I’m not heading out targeting Walleye. Don’t know enough about fishing for them to target them. Just looking for some open water I can get my float tube out on. Maybe I can find some whites or even a kitty to play with. Something to stretch my string. That would put a smile on my face.
As you have been advised, the early season fishing in the lower Provo is not what it used to be. There is a little ramp there, right on the river, that is good for launching tubes and toons, but the fishing usually doesn’t get good until later in the spring. Then the whities and the kitties swarm in to the shallows and it can be pretty good.
I prefer launching at Lindon this time of year. Sometimes I go north and fish from the mouth of Battle creek and up along the reeds…from shallow to about 5 feet deep. Catch some of my biggest cats of the year in that area about this time. Also some walleyes cruising the area before going up the creek…and feeding on the whities prespawn.
**I also like to fish the flats between the harbor and the bubbleup. Again, good cats available and if you make it to the bubbleup there are almost always some white bass and sometimes some toothy critters. **
If you like crappies and bluegills you can sometimes still find them inside the harbor early in the year. Some nice largemouth also start moving inside for prespawn feeding.
