Utah Lake Cats Advice

Well I plan on going down to Utah lake this saturday morning for my birthday and I am hoping to finally get into some cats. I plan on using Nightcrawlers and Minnow/Shad baits and maybe some of that Chicken Liver dough bait. I plan on being there by 6:30 AM and will be going by boat.

I have not had a ton of luck this year so im lookin for some pointers of what people suggest. From what I read and hear a strong line with a single #2 hook about foot and a half off the bottom with a sinker is the way to go. Is that what you would suggest at this time of year going for cats?
Thanks in advance

OH and I hear minnows are the best overall bait at the time so does anyone know where I can get some in the Farmington area or on the drive to the lake? thanks a ton

you can buy minnows at Sporstmans Warehouse. They are frozen. I always find them pretty soft. If using a sinker I prefer to go with a slip sinker cats can get finiky about any rsistance on the line.. on other times they dont mind and pound the bait pretty hard. You might also fish a night crawler or minnow under a bobber near the reeds. Good luck on the kitties

With the weather forecast for the next few days, including Saturday I don’t think fishing for cats at Utah Lake is a good plan. Stormy weather, especially at Utah Lake, can make cat catching difficult at best.

Where are you launching from? I generally fish the north end of the lake, so my suggestion apply there.

My simple set up is just a swivel with slip sinkers and a snelled #1 or 2 hook. i use this just because it is simple and easy to replace the hook if you break it, snag it and loose it, or if you hook one deep and want to cut it off.

I very rarely fish with a bobber, and i rarely fish in water deeper than 5ft. i always fish early morning when it is cooler. cant really say one spot is really any better than others on the north end, we catch them in almost every spot we try. but if you catch 2-3 at one spot and go a spell without catching any…move. you probably have caught most of the active fish in the area. move another 50-75 yards down the weedline and start over.

been a month since i was out, but i use mostly white bass meat and night crawlers. carp meet is another great option. Late spring this year, i caught a few on chicken liver/hearts, but not many. lots of people use minnows and do great, i just have never tried them. i was using the crawler in the middle of the carp pods trying to catch them for bait, but just kept catching cats.

i anchor my boat about 15 yards from the weed line and cast back to the wedline. using any little point or pocket in in the weeds as a target. as close to the weeds as you can get without getting hung up.

one thing that i do a lot that most people probably don’t… i move and re-cast my bait a lot. if i get a pop and drop, give it a little tug to entice it. if after a couple minutes i don’t get a hook up, i reel in, check my bait and recast. often right back in the same spot, or 2-3 feet on either side of where i just was.

try a small grub or jig around the rocks at whatever marina you launch from. moving water is good this time of year. dont spend a ton of time, but try to catch a couple white bass to add to your bait arsenal.
i usually fillet my white bass from the carcass, but leave the skin side on. makes it hard to get on the hook, but also makes it hard to get off the hook. not uncommon to catch 5-6 fish on the same piece of WB. it will eventually get mushy and be just skin left, but it works good.

I plan on taking my wife and a couple friends out Friday morning for a couple hours. i will post my trip or at least reply to you on this post and let you know how we did.

good luck and let everyone know how it turned out.
