What can I say, the big brown pond rocked Saturday! Met a BFT member that I hadn’t seen in a couple of years (SlayerAce) his friend Randy, his son and a friend of his. The white bass fishing was slow, but the bluegills were hungry and very eager to bite jigs jigs tipped with waxies. I personally caught at least 150 of them and a nine inch perch and a couple of whities to boot. Randy did even better than that. No crappies or largies this time though. Turned back 2 to 3 for every one I kept, and I kept a limit (50). Ice was about 6 or 7 inches thick. I was using glow and also chartreuse Ratsos, but anything small in those colors worked. Orange also worked well.
Some of the 'gils were Pelican sized 'gils, so that was a lot of fun.
It was good to fish with you again Randy and Larry.
I’m going back on New Years Day. Should be a lot of fun…hope the whities are biting a bit more this time though…

That’s funny since you are the one that primarily fishes panfish lakes(Mantua, Hyrum, etc.) looking for big trophy trout Derek, LOL![:p][:p] I’ll have you know that I’ve fished two trout lakes already this year on the harddeck (Cleveland and Scofield) and caught some nice slime rockets. Now I’m mostly after the tastier fish, but am planning a trip to the berry on 1/10. You should come along. I’ll get you into some big slimers then!
Sounds like alot of fun. With Saratoga shutdown to all but residents I need to find a place to get into some of those good gills. Were they at any peticular depth or mostly hanging in cover?
I was fishing on the Northern half of the lake. Any of the harbors are a good bet this time of year. If you don’t catch any at the first hole within 10 minutes of dropping jig, just keep drilling a few more holes in different parts of the harbors and moving around there. Also try next to reeds or areas close to them or the docks. Good luck.
Nice going. Utah Lake is an underrated bluegill fishery. There are an amazing amount of fish if you can find them. I’m glad to hear SlayerAce is still around. I don’t know him personally, but he was the first BFT member that I met while fishing.
Congrats on a fine outing to Utah Lake. I fished with both of those gentlemen awhile back on a sturgeon trip to Idaho. Glad to hear that they are both among the living.

Thanks for posting the information. I love to catch blue gills and they are such good eating. I have only tried down at Utah lake once and didn’t do well. I do want to go again.

Go to AF or Pelican Bay. Fish along the docks, or better yet fish along the reeds. The gills will hold to some kind of structure generally. Fish with the smallest lures you have, tipped with a tiny piece of crawler or a wax worm. If you don’t start catching fish pretty quickly you should move. You cannot have too small a hook for bluegill.
