Utah Big Game Applications Due 4/23

So I got my application in early for the first time in a long time… Maybe that will help my luck at Drawing… Went for the Mt. Dutton Elk, Cache Restricted Weapon Deer Hunt and a Mt. Goat tag… What are you guys applying for this year?

So do you guys have open sights on your rifles? I ended up having to get a new barrel for my encore with the open sights, but had to do a specialty order so I’m waiting 3 months to get it… Went with a .308 since sights are probably only good for up to 200 yards so figured a .308 would be a great gun within that range… Kind of excited to try that hunt with the new rules… Hope it will be a fun one… Later J

I applaud the State for the Restricted Weapons Hunts, just wish more of our areas had the restrictions.

It is time to go back to Deer Hunting and not just Deer Shooting, and the restricted weapons will help that.

Alton CWMU Deer and a OTC Elk tag is all I am in for.

I initially put in for a Moose tag but decided to go point only for now until all four of my grandsons are old enough to go (pack out animal) with/for me.

I drew Dutton many years ago. What an incredible area. Not many places left in Utah like Dutton where if you make a big enough mistake you die.

I loved my Dutton hunt for that alone, it really fine tunes your senses.

Good luck Jeff!

P.S. I also shoot the Encore system, but this year I am going to use my hammer Hawken for a cow Elk.

I’m lucky. The only license I need is the combination hunting/fishing. Covers all of my endeavors - catch fish & shoot ducks. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Hey Shane, good luck on your draws… I’m not ready to give up my scopes permantly, love the accuracy you can get with them, so you can make one shot kills… But I am looking forward to trying the open sights… Only thing I don’t like is there are still a bunch of tags on the unit, so you probably won’t find many animals you can get onto very easy… But I’m open to the challenge… Long range archery… I think it will be fun… I sure like my Encore, for being able to hunt both scoped rifle elk and open sights deer in the same month without having to resight it in each time… I just liked them better a couple years ago when the barrels weren’t as expensive as they are now… Hope your number comes up this year… later jeff

Hey Bob, that’s the way to draw each year… Glad you don’t have to wait for the lottery to know if you can hunt this fall… I really need to get back into waterfowl, I’ve been away too long… Later Jeff

I got mine in !. will see. Good luck to everyone who applied!

Good luck Riley… Been waiting for my elk tag for over 30 years now, so sure hope my waiting for last in line finally comes through… Going to be too old to hunt hard by the time I finally get a tag… Hope I get it soon… Hope you don’t have to wait so long… Later J

Jeff - you ought to draw Mt. Dutton with 30 points or were you not as diligent in applying each year, so you’re a few short of that? I haven’t looked at the odds for Dutton, but 30 points seems like plenty…even for early rifle.

I put in for a point for gen deer and a point for LE antelope. Put in for the La Sal mountain goat hunt, but with 10 points, that’s a flyer. I should draw an LE elk tag in WY this fall and my wife should get a LE antelope tag here in UT. I have points to draw both an antlerless deer and elk tag too, so we’ll see what we pull before ai pull the trigger on one of those tags.

Unfortunately I drew out for an elk tag the year they started doing the points, so I had to wait five years before I could put in for elk, so I only have 24 points so I think I’m on the bubble for the tag. Last year all the higher points drew and there was like 11 with the same points as me that put in… So if there weren’t too many San Juan hunters that jumped to Dutton, I should have a four in eleven chance to draw… So about 1 in 3 so it’s a maybe, but still a bit of a long shot… I put in for the same goat tag as you did, but have less points, so really long odds there.. But I do have a lifetime permit, so I should get my Cache deer tag… So at least I’ll get to hunt deer this year… Good luck… Jeff
