Unusual sturgeon trips

I made two one-day sturgeon trips this week. It was nice to have the weather finally cool down enough that I was comfortable going after them again. I fished a new area and we caught a few. The first trip we managed to land 10 (also lost 4), with the largest going 76". The second trip we landed 13 (also lost 3 and had 1 break off), with the largest going 78". On both trips we missed far more bites than we hooked.

The first trip was all sturgeon; however, the second trip was extremely unusual. I have been fishing for sturgeon for ~15 years and never caught a carp. On this trip I caught 3 carp (all mirror carp), two Utah chubs and a perch. The carp were all caught on pickled herring (Having used herring on all of my trips I figured carp didn’t like pickled herring).

Attached are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Looks like another good trip in the books.

Going to see if I can my brother into one of those fish this next weekend.

Thanks for the report.
I was up there for the first time this year last Friday jigging for perch from my kayak. It was a Blast, most were under 8”, but I did keep some over 8”, including one 11.75 incher.
It was a lot of fun. I hope to get back, but it’s getting to be the time of year that I take the grandkids to strawberry in the boat to jig for Cutthroat’s.

Thank you for the report.

Another good morning of bass & perch.  Fished from 7-11:30.  Wore a sweatshirt & sweatpants, and no sunglasses for the first time this season.  Cloudy & cool (43 at launch — 73 when I came off), plus a continuous ripple.  Bigger bass still patrolling the big boulders.  Got my two meals of perch fillets, tho only one jumbo this time.  Perch hanging in the 10-20’ range, and they are finally thick along the east side of the dam. Water 65.  North side of the ramp has run out of cement (been closed for a few weeks), while south side is leveling out horizontally and difficult floating your boat off.  Better align right next to the courtesy dock or you’re gonna get wet feet climbing in & out of the truck.
