Haven’t fished more than 2-3 times this year. Business is busy, normal day job, and no pontoon boat…
Decided to get out the duck boat and run it a little, see if there were any hungry fish. We didn’t have too much time to fish, but decided to get out early and off early. Got some worms and a bag of shrimp, just incase we didn’t find the WB.
Well, I thought we were early. We beat most people on the water, but when we pulled in the ramp, I noticed an all too familiar white SUV parked just above the ramp. I chuckled to myself and looked out in the harbor, yep. the familiar dark spot with a bunch of appendages sticking off it. fixing to make the corner out of the harbor. My brothers asked what i was chuckling about? I replied, “Got to spend the night to beat Pat on the water.”
We launched, took a while to burn the old oil out of the cylinders of the jet. but she ran great after that. As we pulled out of the harbor, TD was just about to make his run south. Hollered at him for a minute, We wanted to make the bubble up to see how he did, just not enought time.
We headed to Poo River and one of my brothers had 2 fish in the boat before we could position and set anchors. We had hits every cast and a hook up about every third. got a couple in the live well and decided to make some bait and get a cat rod in the water. Not quite the infamous RC killer, but close. red and chartruse were hot.
We threw most of them back, keeping a few small ones, and a medium one or 2, for bait. Got a catfish rod out and bang, bang, bang, bang. couldn’t get a line to the bottom without the WB hiting out baits.
Rigged up a couple poles with larger plastics and a large chatter bait. Thinking there might possibley be a fish or 2 with some teeth. Same thing, couldn’t reallty fish for eyes becasue the WB were hitting the large plastics too. After a few more hooks ups on the cat poles and the larger baits, we decided to move away from the WB and focus on cats.
Strange day for us. I would venture to guess 85% of the cats I catch at UL are on WB meat. not today. Never caught a single cat on WB meat. Shrimp and worms were the breakfast of choice.
We moved west of the Poo about 100yds. kitty, kitty, WB, WB, kitty. Moved west another 75-100 yards, kitty, kitty, WB,WB, Kitty.
We continued to pick up some nicer WB (10in) on worms and shrimp. We threw everything back, none of us were excited about cleaning fish.
Occasionally i would glance to the south west and would catch a glimps of TD’s rooster tail. Thats a far stretch, but if the sun is just right, you catch a glimpse of the white numbes on his tube.
we were off the water by 10:00. in our 3 hours, I would say30 - 40 WB, and 7-8-9 cats. all the cats were same size, 20-22 inches i would guess. No monsters. Used my standard #2 snelled hook on a swivel with 2 egg weights sliding above the swivel. fished within 2-3 feet of the weed line. I doubt we caught a fish in more than 3ft of water
You have all seen LOTS of WB and Cat pics from UL. We have a pic or 2 on our phones, maybe post later.
The cloud and smoke cover kept the temps comfortable. Good day, good fish. Good to see TD, even for a minute. The boat ran great. C’mon duck season.
