Well I may be a newbie to Utah Lake fishing but it is still fun to get out and fish whether you catch anything or not. I have been out to the lake the past few weeks hoping to find some kitties. I must be doing something wrong so I was looking for some advice. Unfortunately I am still in college and still poor so I have no water craft or way out on to the water although I am now saving my extra cash for a float tube to get away from the shore. But I was wondering if anyone had any tips for fishing from the shore. Like i said I have been out 2 or 3 times each week the past few weeks with out any luck. Well, I caught 1 mudder but that is it. I have been trying out by provo airport finding some places i can get out to the water. But i have had no luck. I have tried worms, minnows and carp meat. Just looking for some tips. Any suggestions?

When the weather warms up the water more, you’ll have good success from the shore for cats.
**Don’t jump off your tacklebox or OD on smelly jelly just yet. The kitties are acting a lot like the white bass…they can’t figure out the weather so they are not sure what they are supposed to do. **
**If the sun ever comes out for more than one or two days…and the water warms up just a teensy bit…all those fish are gonna go bonkers. They got a lot of stuff they wanna do and gotta do. And that means getting closer to shore and bank tanglers. **
We have a lot of good fishing ahead of us but it is tough being patient when your “anglers’ clock” does not sync with the clock the fishies are using.

Yeah I guess i am just getting to excited. I have had fishing fever pretty bad the last couple of weeks I guess i just need to let time catch up and let the fish come out and play. I just am a bit to anxious. Should be a good summer though cant wait to get out more. Thanks for you post. I am working on getting a tube and when I do I would love some advice. Thanks again.
TubeDude: I’m new here and have been told that you are the master fisherman at Utah Lake. I’ve been trying my hand at catching me one of those “kitties” but have been skunked the past two years. I don’t have a boat so I rely on shore fishing. Any advise on where to go and what to use to catch some whities and kitties? I’d appreciate any advice you may have.

Welcome aboard. Hope we can help you learn and enjoy good old Utah Lake. It gets a bad rap from a lot of folks but provides some darn fine fishing…and the fish ARE good to eat.
Instead of writing a book here, let me send you a couple of PDF writeups…on catfish and white bass. After you finish your homework assignment feel free to PM me or post questions that are still left over.
All the Utah Lake regulars have really been frustrated this year. Winter stayed well into spring and spring has not really sprung yet. Water temps are way behind what they should be and both the fish and the fishermen are impatient.
But, any day now the good reports will start coming in and you can try some of the spots and techniques suggested in those writeups. Keep a log and hook up with more experienced anglers whenever you can to learn more and more as you go along. It’s only taken me about 50 years but I am starting to get the hang of it. I still learn something new on almost every trip and the more I learn the more I realize I have yet to learn. That’s the kind of homework assignments I like.
Gush - this is the kind of post -response- that makes the forum so great. Couple new users, tons of good info to basic simple questions.
Gotta love it. UL is on my list this year for sure. New waters to try, new fish to encounter.
Hey thanks for the information. Just off a whim I decided to check out Lindon Harbor last night. It started really slow and thought I was going to get skunked. Then about 7:30 the whities just started hitting like crazy. My daughter caught like 10 fish in 10 casts in a row. She was so excited and that’s why I go. We probably got over 50 white bass in about 1 1/2 hours. We used green, white, and red jigs tipped with worms. The best fishing I’ve ever had at UL.

Hey, glad you got into some fish and that your daughter had a good time. That’s what it’s all about.
This time of year the fish sometimes become a lot more active late in the day after the sun has warmed the water a few degrees.

Now if I could land me a nice Kittie. A lady next to us caught a 2-3 lb cat on worms - but we didn’t see any others land a cat.
