UL 11/27... ON the ice.

Hit Utah Lake yesterday evening for about an hour and a half with my brother. Fishing was slow. I fished the previous day from the docks at Provo Harbor.. no bites. So, yesterday I slipped out to a “honey hole”. There was more action than at the docks, but not much. Ended up with 1 whitey and 3 perch between us.

Nice Report. I think the fish are still moving in, it should be hot in a few weeks. There should also be better ice by then. That looks like come good clear ice, but I still want 4" before I will wander too far from shore.

is it safe to eat fish out of that lake?

Aside from Tube Dude’s third eye and the barbels under his chin, there ain’t no problem eating fish from Utah Lake !!! ( you must be new on the board ???)

kind of new, i was down by saratoga springs this summer it smelled really bad and i thought geneva steel left alot of toxic stuff in that lake.i also read reports on here about pollution and diapers down there.I wouldnt take the chance myself.

The fish there are toxic. Absolutely awful! Stay away! Do NOT even fish there!!! [;)][;)][;)]

you dont have to worry about that, you lucky guys down south can have it.I cant see driving 70 miles thru traffic to fish in a lake that smells like that.I guess we still have it pretty good up north.lol

+1, I know that the fish there have made me do tons of strange things.[:p]

Me and my little guy went out today to check it out look damn scary looked like a seen from deadlist catch the wind was blowing broke up most of the ice and the harbors looked really shady we just out for a drive and to drop a camera down a hole of the docks to see what was lurking. Seen some good stuff but will wait for some safe ice. But I seen some things I need on the end of my hook and just know how to go about it. I just need to have the quick fish 6 so we dont get the lake lice on us (LAKE LICE) commonly known as a$$ H()L!s that move right in when you start killing them> THAT guy THAT DRILLS RIGHT NEXT TO YOU WITHOPUT SAYING A WORD, THEN THAT GUY THAT DROP DOWN ONE OF YOUR HOLES AFTER OYU JUST CAUGHT ONE. when your in the tent nobody can see a thing lets plan a trip. And I will bring the taser gun to keep them at bay that might more fun that fishing maybe just maybe.

In all seriousness, the only warnings on the fish from Utah Lake so far has been the PCB levels found in carp and catfish. You can search around on the forum and find several posts made by TubeDude and others about this. I have caught plenty of kitties from there and they have all tasted great. Having said that I mainly target the smaller species that are present in the lake such as bluegill and crappie. These smaller dudes feed mainly on the invertebrates and bugs that are in the lake. To a redneck like me, they have extremely sweet meat. The yellow perch there are good too…just harder to find consistently and I have yet to catch a jumbo out of there.
I’m not sure what you were smelling over there around Saratoga. Could have been some funky odors emanating from the hot springs there or it could have been during that magical time when the “lake turns over.” I’m not sure if this happens at Utah Lake since it is so shallow that the wind keeps it stirred up. Other lakes I have seen do this when the heavier cold water sinks and the warmer water rises bringing rotting organic material and lovely gases to the top. A lot of times one of the gases making its way to the top is Hydrogen Sulfide or rotten egg gas. You gotta love the smell of that stuff.
