Uintas ice fishing

So this Saturday was planned for snowmobiling, but then my friends dad Wanted to get out once this year and his hEalth is declining a bit. So we thought why not take him to trial lake and let him fish and we go play on the sleds and then come back and do a little fishing ourselves. So how thick is the ice this time of year? Have a new power jiffy auger but no extender, will that be long enough? Also which lakes would you go to? And will traditional ice jigs and colors work? I fish there quite a bit during the summer but have never ice fished the uintas. Any help out there will be greatly appreciated. Pm’s welcome as well

Ice fished Trial once a few years back. Non-stop catching of small half-starved trout. Go small with about any kind of bait and you should do fine.

Sorry I can’t help ya much…
Just wanted to say what an awesome idea… I’m not that old but have been under the weather for a number of months.. My friends have been helping me get back outdoors and enjoy the outdoors again..
Praise to both of you for thinking of dad and dad for wanting to get out..
On some small lake I’ve fished with trout in them I’ve used small ice fly type jigs tipped with worm, wax worm, etc… Pinks yellow yellow green are my favorite… I don’t seem to do very well with the red’s orange colors…
Fish on and safe sledding…

sorry i cant help you out on that. probably just traditional ice jigs and ice flys..
give a report on the ice and how the fishing was please ive been wanting to go up just not sure of how the ice is..
be carefull. good luck

Twice a couple of friends and myself have gone to whitney this time of year and it was the fastest catching you could ask for fish are a little bigger and VERY hungery, was a great trip and a nice way to end the ice season.

Never been to Whitney, but it’s a little further than we wanna venture from home I think. Thanks for all the input. I will report back as to what we find. How thick will the ice be? Any guesses. Dont wanna get up there and not have enough auger length to get through:)

It’s going to be a lot thinner than you think all that snow keeps all the heat in I have snowmobiled acrossed open water there. Never iced fished it but would really love to catch so many fish nice fish there during the fall.

We ice fish trial in mid november every year. We stop because the gate is closed on the mirror lake highway. That would be my main concern, is the gate open? The fish in there are all small trout but the fishing is non-stop. I frequently have 50 fish days. Try using small 1/16 to 1/32 jigs tipped with nightcrawler and chartruse powerbait. good luck and let us know if its open.

The gates not open you have to snoemobile in there. You can get on bear river service website or call to see how much snow is up there.

If your a sled head I would guess you know about SNOTEL, but here it is if not. Good site to find out snow conditions, temps and what not.

So we made it up to Trial, water level was super low, never seen it that low. Decided to head up to wash lake. Arrived around noon and tested the ice. 4" of snow on top of 2" of ice on top of 8" of slush then 24" of ice. Needless to say had it been 1/2" thicker the auger wouldn’t have worked. I was right up to my intake. Had to drill a big hole to get the auger down deep enough. Dropped a jig in the water and it wouldn’t go down, thought, we aren’t through the ice??? Then there was a big tug. nice wild rainbow on the other end. Ended up fishing til 4 and lost count of how many fish were landed. Got mostly bows, one broOkie and a couple tigers.

Nice work. How much snow is up there?
