I was wondering if anyone went up the the uinta mountains lately and know if the lower elevation lakes are still unfrozen
Hey FFL with temps as low as they are supposed to get overnight tonight you could have ice tomorrow but not enough to get on it to fish. Be careful. Later J
Ya i know man. I just miss my weekly dose of the uinta tiger trouts. It’s driving me crazy lately. Fishing isn’t as fun as it use to be when I got to be in the uinta for 3 days+ enjoy camping. Oh well there’s always will be next year ![]()
How were you planning on getting to the lakes? After 1-2 ft of snow you need a snowmobile right now. Probable all have some ice after last night. There might still be a window to get in if they leave the Soapstone gate half open as the sometime do early and late winter season. Wait for it to warm up enough to melt the lower snow by the end of the week and give it a shot. If they closed the gate completely or the snow prevents you from reaching your destination there’s always the river as a back up.
Yup that’s the great thing about Utah is things keep changing all year round so we don’t get bored or tired of things and if we have a favorite season it creates anticipation for the next time it comes around. So it’s time to start getting excited for ice. Later J
I was at Mirror Lake on 2 November and 1/3 was iced over. With the snow and cold temps my guess is you won’t find any soft water along the highway. According to UDOT website SR150 is snow packed and requires chains or 4WD. It was scheduled to close this past weekend depending on the weather. Even if the road does stay open I don’t think the lakes will shed any ice.
In years past I have taken my kids up ice fishing on black Friday. But from the sounds of this report the ice may be there but the roads will not be passable and the gates locked then. Dang we have had some fast ice action up there in years past… Open to suggestions on where to take a 9 year old and a 2 year old when their mommy is out shopping.
3-4 inches of ice today at both Teapot and Lost Lake. Fishing was just fair.

How was the road?
Gates aren’t even half way shut at Soapstone but they stopped plowing there now. From Soapstone to Murdock Basin Rd was 50% dry, 50% 1-2 inches of slushy snow. Above there mostly 2-3 inches of snow. I was the first car up past the Provo River Falls after it snowed last night but still very easy to get through as they did plow after the last big snowstorm. It snowed maybe an inch in the hour or 2 I fished. I did some X-C skiing into Murdock Basin after fishing as it wasn’t required to get in and my youngest dog still needed more exercise. A 2 wd drive Camry came up without any problem to there as I left. Almost all the snow on the road below there had melted by that time - about 2:30 pm. You need to get up to at least that Murdock Basin turnoff to do any skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling right now.
I tried out my new ice spud, a Koda Ice Aggressor Jr I got for trips that require a hike or ski in. Went through the 3-4 inches of ice fairly easily in about a minute. Wouldn’t want to use it on foot thick ice but seems great for early and late season ice fishing trips which is all I bother with.
