Shore casters love casting their baits out as far as possible without the bait being ripped off the hook from the enertia of the cast. Using dental floss to tie my baits to the hook has been my way for years. Then along came Atlas Mike’s Miracle Thread. This thin elastic line is great for holding together soft baits like fish, shrimp & liver from being ripped-off the hook during the cast.
So how do you know which line to use? Years of usage has taught me to put my faith in these 2 products, and when to use them. I’ll show you how i attach the baits to the hook & how i tie them on. Salting the baits using rock salt combined with freezing has toughen softer baits such as fish & shrimps. Combine this technique to using dental floss & Miracle Thread and you’re catch ratio will climb. You will also save money buying bait as you won’t lose as much.
Buddy, boat & I all returned for a re-boot this morn. 28-deg air at 7:30 launch; 55 when we pulled off at 1:30. No wind, just a little ripple all day, and sunny by 8am. Water temp started out at 49, ending up at 51. Enjoyed our best bass day all season. No 18" brutes, but 20 smallies in the 12-15" range. Both of us hit for the Grand Slam — trout, bass, perch & crappie., with all fish coming out of one 100’x100’ spot near the NE corner of the dam. Drop-shotted shad shapes and single-tail grubs in light colors did the trick. Slowly working the baits across the bottom much better than vertical fishing right under the boat. My former perch partner now living up near Cascade brought me down some of his marabou flies that he drop-shots for jumbos. Black is the ticket for him up there, but his white and green colored creations worked like a champ for us, particularly on the bass who spit up both perchlets & crawdads. Ran into a local old-timer up there a week ago who told us that the work on the dam was nearing completion and the reservoir would be filling. Sure enough, the lake level rose about 3-4’. Ramp in good shape, about 5-6 boats out there today and loads of shore anglers. Looked as tho everyone was doing some yanking. Returning to the scene of the crime this coming Wed if the weather holds.
