Tubing Jordanelle Rock Cliff 8-18-09

:sunglasses:TubeBabe and I launched at Jordanelle’s Rock Cliff ramp about 7 AM. Air temp 50 and water temp 63…warming to 65 by noon. Steam coming off the water at daybreak. Cool. Water level dropping to seasonal low levels.

Just as we were setting up to launch, a boatload of swim nuts backed down on top of us and took over the ramp. We had to push our stuff off to the side to keep from getting run over and when they pulled the trailer out they soaked my clothes bag with the wash. They put a couple of swimmers in the water and paced them with the boat. They did not come back. Maybe a big brown munched them.

A few fish hitting the top at first light. Most looked like chubs. Tried throwing a variety of spinners and bubble fly rigs. Occasional bumps. Likely chubs that did not have enough class to get hooked.

**Worked up into the channel into shallow water. Again, a few chub risers but nothing trouty. Pitched plastics and metal. Nada, zip, zero. **

**Kicked uplake into deeper water. Did not see much on sonar until after reaching 20 feet. Then, a few fish, mostly suspended. Probably chubs. **

About the time I got into 30 feet plus, I began getting regularly molested by those “Rock Cliff smallmouths” (chubs). Caught them on bubble and fly while also catching them bottom bouncing jigs with the second rod. In some places there were fish all the way between top and bottom in 35 feet of water. But, all that munched my offerings were chubuglies.

Quite a few boats in the arm this morning. Some trolling, some drifting, some anchored and bait fishing. Did not see anybody in a boat bring in a fish. Talked to a couple of boaters and they said they were blank for blank.

TubeBabe worked along the south shoreline and managed to hook a few dink perch (Rock Cliff marlin). I got a few on the other side, in water from 8’ to 30’…on everything from plastic jigs to one of my “California Gold” flies behind a bubble. I had one fish on a “Silver Hilton” fly that acted like a decent rainbow. Screamed line off the drag, ran sideways, headshakes and then a “conservation release”.

There was a substantial group of bank tanglers that apparently were either all in the same family…or at least the same zip code. They set up camp on the road above the shore and along the shoreline and cranked up the music and the loud conversations. I gotta try that. They at least caught a couple of planter rainbows. Don’t know how they fed everybody on those two scrawny hatchery pets. Might be a modern day miracle.

We made an early day of it since we had other things we needed to do before going home. Off the water by noon, just as the westerly breezes were beginning to come up the channel. A nice day and a surprise to see a couple of scrub oak turning orange on the hillside already. Fall ain’t that far away folks.

Had a neat ending to the trip. While we were packing up a pretty grey mink came down the rocks to forage for anything that might have washed ashore. I got him to pose for a couple of pics and when he came over to our vehicle we sacrificed one of our bait perch for his shore lunch. Thought we had seen the last of him when he carried it into the rocks. But, just as I was bending over to pick up my last bag to put in the car, his little face peeked out from under the bumper and he looked at me as if to say…“Where’s dessert?”

Those mink are pretty brave, I guess they don’t know they have a dollar sign hovering above their head. I have seen them at Utah Lake often. Once, I caught one in the back with my hook, turns out, we were both fishing the same hole .

Those dink perch look just like the dink perch I caught out of the rockcliff arm.

Wow those are some whopper perch [;)] Wonder how the ice fishing is going to be this year.
Haven’t hit RC too much this year but hoping to take a trip in Oct when the weather cools down and the power squad thins out.

Just out of curiosity is it legal to BBQ stream side ? I’ve always wanted to fish and grill not necessary grill the fish (bag limit reasons) but just get some steaks going while we fish but always thought it was illegal.

:sunglasses:I think that mink was kinda young and inexperienced…and had maybe been fed by humans before. They don’t last long around mean widdle kids, redneck dudes and stray dogs. Although they can hold their own in a fair fight…and they don’t fight fair.

They do seem to quickly lose their fear of humans when they are fed or if they are not molested. In fact, they get downright cheeky and will steal fish or bait right from your container… or stringer. Small price to pay for the enjoyment they provide.

:sunglasses:Ice fishing for perch has almost been nonexistent for the past couple of winters. The perch crashed three winters ago and have never rebuilt a big population. Still a limit of 50 though. Go figure.

Anytime after about the middle of September is when I start throwing feathers for the big bows in Rock Cliff. Last year we did very well in late October, on orange patterns, and the joke was orange for halloween.

**No problem with legality in cooking your catch on the water. The only restrictions are for canning or preserving large quantities of fish in order to be able to catch more. Some people interpret the regulations to mean that once you process the fish you can catch another limit. Nope. Ditto for hook and cook. Technically you can only keep and cook one limit per day. But, that does not seem to mean much to some folks. **

Now pardon me while I go ice down my aching muscles…after battling all those big perch and chubs.

wow! did you get that perch checked to seee if it was a line class record???

:sunglasses:That is so strange that not even the good ol 15 inch 'bows are biting there this summer… How odd is that… I wonder if this cooler air of the past few days has anything to do with it?

Aye aye aye!! Que fiesta!! haha
TD, that “marlin” pic was HILARIOUS!!! haha

I was once fishing at the Provo river at the LDS Motion Picture Studio in Provo.

A mink came and stared right at me about 7 feet away. I didn’t realize that they loose fear of humans. At first I thought it was one of the puppet masters from the LDS Motion Picture Studio up in a tree above playing with a puppet. But I saw no strings and no puppet master in the tree. I was shocked to see it was a wild mink.

I get those happy feeders get them tame. Cute.

Calm down Schfifty. I hold the line class record for the smallest perch. I dare anyone to challenge me.

:sunglasses:There are always bows biting somewhere on Jordanelle. They just did not happen to be in the shallower end of the Rock Cliff arm yesterday…or biting on whatever I had to offer. None of the trollers were getting them on the usual pop gear and worm either.

Back on the 21st of July, LloydE and I fished out from the PWC ramp and caught some NICE rainbows. But, they were on the bottom in 60 feet of water. Here is a picture of Lloyd with his 4 that went from 16" to 20".

Actually, the cooler temps will help get the bows to move into shallower water. They go deeper when the surface temps are much over 60 degrees.

:sunglasses:Nope. Here is a pic of my pending record on “marlin tackle”.

I caught one 17" bow and 8 chubs out of that area Sunday morning. Located quite a few fish at 30’ down in 60’ or water. Not sure what they were.
Two years ago I had a want-a-be river otter ( Mink ) climb all over my pontoon as I was visiting the shore line. Snoopy little buggers !!

:sunglasses:I’m guessing that most of the suspended fish were probably chubs. I was catching them at all depths by either dropping down to them or reeling up to them with various jigs and worm combinations.

When I lived in Arizona I fished the big scour hole area below Horseshoe Dam on the Verde River. On a couple of occasions I had a REAL otter come out to play with me. Never got close enough to make contact but swam around me “talking” to me and looking playful. Must have been the small crappies I tossed to it that convinced it I was a buddy.

I have also had several “close encounters” with beavers on different waters. They are usually accompanied by loud tail smacking on the water to let me know I am encroaching on their territory and they want me to leave. That little show totally ruined a great session of fly fishing on a little lake in Colorado one time. Formerly frisky brookies and bows decided they didn’t want any part of the commotion and headed for the depths. Beavers are always a cool thing to see in the wild but they are not tuber friendly.

Hey Pat sounds like you and the Mrs. had fun. Are you going to Mount your Marlin?[;)]

:sunglasses:Nah. I’m not into that kinky stuff.

Just a quick kiss and then a release.

How big of a catfish do you think you could catch using those chubs for bait…whole?

Actually, we always release those big chubs. They are an important part of the food chain in Jordanelle…just like in Starvation.

How big of a catfish could “I” catch with a chub that size?
You have made my day .
I caught a minnow carp on the Bear, it’s top fin got tangled in my braided ROFLMAO

Had a bass leave me one of those on my toon this morning!:sunglasses:
