Trout Fishing

What’s your favorite bait? What do you find works most of the time?[fishon]

Flies…Although, the older I get the harder it is to catch the little buggers!! :astonished::laughing::laughing:

Just messing with you! [:P]

For trout in the larger rivers or lakes, I like streamers or nymphs. Most small streams I use dry flies.

Give me a worm and marshmallow fished off the bottom! If fishing for planters with the kids PoerBait.

Rapala hj03 in perch with the hooks swapped to give you perfect suspensions. Fished on 10lb nanofil mainline to a 3 to 5 foot 4lb fluoro leader secured with a double uni on an ultralight.

I agree with the worm/mallow floating off the bottom, or a worm injected with air, but I keep forgetting to put syringes into my bag. I have also put the worm 5-6 feet under the bobber (makes it a bugger to cast) but gets it down where the fish are sometimes, or a weight on the end, worm part way up, and then a tiny bobber that submerges from the weight.

We recently went to a little pond near Ketchum, couldn’t get them to take fake maggots or worms very well so I switched to a silver kastmaster and started catching them. Then my wife put on a black Jake with red spots and had a fish on almost every cast, three in a row at one point. No more swallowed hooks, easy release, probably caught 25-30 fish each.

I tried a bunch of different lures while we knew they were biting, the Jake did the best but I caught fish on brown trout and perch rapalas, and even caught a 9-10" fish on my giant 6" rapala. There was no way for it to eat the thing, but it nipped at the tail and hooked itself perfectly.

I have also put the worm 5-6 feet under the bobber (makes it a bugger to cast) but gets it down where the fish are sometimes,

Ever tried a slip bobber?

I have some slip bobbers but haven’t ever tried using them correctly. I may have to do that more in the future

I have a fish finder that my wife gave me for Christmas, and if I ever get a pontoon or boat out on the water I may have to try that and a slip bobber to put it right where I need it with ease.

What kind of trout fishing experience are you looking for? Boat trolling? Bank yanking? Flyfishing?

Lakes? Rivers? Ponds?

If your on the bank, you really can’t go wrong with a worm up off the bottom a foot or so.

Berkley has some stuff called " Gulp Alive Pinched Crawler", about 7 bucks for one of those little jars, but slap 1/2" or so on a small hook, fish it off the bottom, and you’ll fill your quota pretty quick. It’s got a really strong garlic scent to it.

I’ve found that each spot you go to will have something different that is effective. When I troll in my boat though I don’t leave the dock without a Large size gold with red dotted Jakes lure and a hand full of assorted Kamlooper spoons.
