TROLLING WITH A MIDRANGE OUTBOARD

Hi all. I’m a newbie.
Living in Minnesota, I fish northern pike primarily and largemouth bass. Last spring I bought a new 17 foot boat powered by a 90 HP Yamaha outboard. I do not have any “kicker” motor. I’m wondering how bad (or good) it is if I were to do a lot of trolling with my outboard. In reverse, the speed is perfect for the type of fishing I do. Not being a mechanic whiz, do I run the risk of fouling my plugs on my new four stroke, or not. If I were to get a kicker motor, I’d want one that I could control via my steering console if that were even possible. Any help or advice out there? Thank you.
N.

Hi Navigator and welcome to the BFT.. I am sure there is someone on this site that can answer your question..

you may want to try the Minnesota forum since that would be more to your local waters.. you could also try the General Freshwater fishing forum and see what happens there..

Again.. welcome to the BFT and I hope you will have a great time here posting your stories and asking any questions that come to mind..

Hi there NAVIGATOR51 and welcome to the BFT. I’m sure there are a lot of members at the BFT that know about OB motors - but if it was me I would contact the Yamaha people by e-mail or call their 800#. I would want to get the information directly from the company that provides the warranty. Good luck.

Welcome to the site and I also use my 40hp 4 stroke for trolling at 1.5 - 2 knots. It hasn’t fouled yet. I think your gun shy due to the old 2 strokes that did foul up unless run hard from time to time.
