I have a 2 stroke 5hp Mercury marine outboard that gave me a little trouble last year. It would run fine for 20 or 30 minutes then die. It would then be very hard to start. I did a search on BFT to see if I could answer my own question. I still have a question. Skinnylynnie said a guy named Dave did good work down here, but that was almost 2 years ago. Anybody had any experience they would care to share???

Called “Dave” he still works on outboards. He lives in Provo so that is better for me. I know you guys up North have a great guy up that way. I will give Dave a try and report later. Thanks

my guess is you have a bad impelller you are over heating that is why once it gets hot it is so hard to start.

I would say you have carb problems! I had a older merc with a bad impeller and it ran fine when it got hot. Sounds like its flooding or starving!! Could just be your pump up bulb,they go bad and loose presure? M.H.

Try a can of Sea Foam in your gas tank. It worked wonders for my son’s motor. It will clean out the carbon and fowlings and your motor will not have to work so hard.
We get it at Auto Zone.
PS your water pump is working isn’t it?

Thanks for all the suggestions. The water pump works so I think it is the carb. I will get a can of that seafoam… sounds like good stuff. “Dave” said he would inspect the motor and give me an estimate before he does any work. I need a reliable motor to troll with. If this motor can’t do the job I will buy a new one…GULP!!!

You didn’t mention how to get ahold of “Dave”. I don’t see him in the phone book either. Do you know if he also works on stern drives at all? I could use an adjustment on my reverse, and I fear boat repairs more than root canals.

Dave’s Number is 427-3984. I am not sure if he works on all motors and drivers or just outboards.
