Tips for strawberry?

I’m headed up to strawberry on Monday and need some tips… I seem to strike out everyone I go. So what are some good ways to fish the lake? Fly fishing or spin?

I am there right now and it is wicked ugly. Hope tomorrow is better.

Any luck?

A lot of people do really well with fly gear there, but usually when they get out on a float of some kind. Mobility is a big plus on such a big water.

Using minnow imitating flies/lures (or actual minnows) is a great way to get the larger fish to bite.

Chironomids have historically been good on Strawberry or pretty much anywhere. You might have to weed through some dinks to find what you’re looking for, but any action is good action, right?

Kastmasters in rainbow or gold can be effective. Spinners are good too.

The biggest key is to move around and keep trying. The fish are all over the water column, so you might get bites with short casts as well as the super lobs.

Just go have fun and if you’re not catching anything, move around.

(Areas with a steep drop-off will allow more fish in the area to see your offering.)

Loah, you rock brother! Thanks and I’ll let you know how it goes! I do have a float tube so I will be able to be mobile… If its not hurricane forces that is!

Blizzard most the day. Walked down this evening and roll cast a chironomid. Five cast and four fish. I picked the right mid! Awesome. Tomorrow I will get more than 15 minutes …lol

So if I’m going to using an idicator on the lake im assuming I need different flys than what I use on the river? Any suggestions?

minnows under a bobber or dragged usually does me well. The crawdads make just deadsticking sometimes iffy.

Craw colored wolly buggers on the top is what we usually use and it’s usually good seeing them swirl the surface

Awesome! Thanks

What are you best at fly or spin. I do both, but I am much better at spin. But some mornings on a calm Strawberry , they are hitting flies on the surface, that even a rope chucker, like me could catch. Location is the prime concern. Renegade seems good for toons, if no wind.

ill be up there too flygoddess.

Well 90% of my time is spent fly fishing but I’m new to lakes and just caught my first fish last week on a fly at strawberry so I’m still pretty sketchy at it but I can do both at this point…

I have never fished a bugger or a clouser under an indicator, so no help there. I fish nymphs and miss under an Indy. I use type II, Type III or Depth Charge for streamers or crawfish. Fish were top feeding last night, so shallow. Stark, you do amazing, doubt you need any help here.
Woke up to snow. Wait and see how the day fairs. I just love camping, fishing is a bonus and not taken for granted.
Soldier Creek side. Monday should be the day.
Edit - 7am and it’s 35 degrees

Wow you are a die hard! I love it… I’m thinking we will get up there early morning and I’ll try using an indicator and see how the day fares! Soldier creek side it is… Slay them fish flygoddess! Save some for me[;)]

Putting them back for you :sunglasses: blizzard today, what a blast. Not freezing temps though. Elk hair cardiac…should have a video if my coat was out of the way. Look for us. Red Chevrolet pick up just inside the first camp ground.

did well today on the soldier creek side:)

Fly fishing has a ton of variables. Deep/shallow, fast/slow, big/small.

Try this… This works by the way with any sink rate line and even floating. Kick out away from shore the length of a good cast. Now kick parallel to shore and cast towards shore and retrieve back to your tube. Make sure to be cast right up to the shore. Or at least no more than two feet from the shore.

Do that ten times per fly and then change flies. after five or so flies move out about twice as far as you just were and repeat. Only then you would be making the same length cast as before and not to shore. I don’t cast out in front of myself very often because I was just there and would have most likely spooked fish. So obviously I cast off to one side or the other mostly and that has helped me a ton.

As my name implies I troll a ton too. If the wind is really stinking up your casting just let the line out in front of you and kick/troll backwards. Now jerk the line in a foot or so every ten seconds or so. Hold on to the line at all times because the hits can come at any time.

If you want some company hitting the berry some time pm me and I’ll show you what I know.

If none of your favorite flies work maybe we could have a Fish My Fly contest. A bunch of us send you a fly and you fish each one for an hour and then send the winner a hundred bucks. I’m kidding about the money but the results would be fun to hear about on here.

Sorry we missed you. We were out on the water today. I was on my Renegade and hubby on my Assault. A lot of doubles! I trolled a little with two pole permit. One Intermediate and one Type II. They were hitting both flies on each rod…crazy! About 20 to 30 feet deep.
Ended up fishing the Intermediate. Cast out wait a second, then very always long strip stopping on the fifth one. Worked for me. [;)]
