The pig, Hyrum, and Mantua ice update.

Drove up to the pig after work today and made it all the way to the inlet. Only about 300 yards of open water there and the edges are frozen but rotten elsewhere. No fish or bites on rapalas.

Stopped at the ramp at Hyrum and there is a strip of open water at the ramp that is 60’ by 400 yards and a big open spot in the middle. Caught 1 small LMB and had another couple bumps. Should be ice free by mid next week.

I drove by Mantu and saw a bit more open water near the inlets. Another 2 weeks probably on this one but very low water. Edges were frozen but looked rotten. Hope this helps.:sunglasses:

I don’t what the pig is but glad to hear that Mantua and Hyrum are almost unfrozen. Can’t wait to get the boat up there and start catching the bass. Thanks again for the report. One more think you said Mantua is low so will you still be able to launch a boat there?

I wouldn’t cause it’s so low. Of course I don’t have a boat so what do I know.

My pontoon works just fine [;)]

The pig is porcupine.

I don’t think you will have any trouble launching but you will be restricted as to where you can get to. I don’t know when they are going to start filling it again. They let water out in anticipation of runoff i think.:sunglasses:

Heard any news on East Canyon??? I’m thinking about heading up there tomorrow and checking things out.

The Pig is a name some people hung on Porcupine, It’s one of the prettier lakes in Northern Utah and can be great for some nice browns and small Kokanee, has been one of my favorites for over 30 years. :sunglasses:

thanks for the update

Where is porcupine lake anyway?

Thanks for the report on Hyrum btw. I almost went there last weekend, but it got too late, so I just went to Logan river instead.

My brother tried to go to Hyrum last year but couldn’t figure out where to get in so he just took a raft out on the river somewhere he said. From looking at googlemaps it appears the entrance is somewhere on the west side, is that correct? Any suggestions? Also, with it being a State park, is there a fee to get in to fish there like there is for Willard, etc? Any suggestions for WHERE on the lake is a good place to fish from?

With Mantua, I hear the fishing’s pretty good there sometimes. Where is the entrance/parking and is there a fee to park/fish there?

Any tips on what to use in either of those places? I may try to fish one of them sometime next week for my first time.

Thanks for the update Brody.

How muddy was the road around Porcupine ? And I sure hope people aren’t quite the pigs they have been there. Last year - though it seems every year_ that upper end was a trash dump. I actually filled my truck bed with trash in the spring and then again in Sept. Just waiting for a land owner to say enough is enough.

I will answer all these ? this afternoon. Alot of new ones and not enough time.[;)]

Is there any place up there (porcupine) to take a trailer and camp by the lake?

I was up at east canyon last sunday and there was a huge crack going all the way across the lake about 10yds wide so i’m sure you’ll find enough open water to fish. The fish were surfacing but i forgot my tackle box and only had worms and that was not working but if i would of had my jigs or spinners i bet i would of limited out in no time, on the slimers that is. the boat dock was still frozen up to the edges with soft soft edges it looked like. Back by the big rock was open also but it looked very low back there water level wise. I so bad want to leave work right now and go up there to try it again with my tackle this time. Good luck if you go, should be good fishin.

As far as camping, my buddy takes his motorhome up there every summer and leaves it for free. There are no conveniences though, you have to bring everything in with you. And please take everything with you when you leave, the place does get its share of pigs thats for sure. My friends wife made a killing on aluminum last summer out of there. right before you head up to the dam there is sign that says no camping beyond this point. It is ignored as you will see if you go up there. But there are plenty of spots to camp at before the sign, just look on the sides of the road when your driving up there. I love porcupine and it isnt that well known so i cringe when i see it on this site. but then i hope all on this site are responsible and wont trash MY LAKE!! It is also one of my favorite places to go in utah. VERY BEAUTIFUL. You can see the browns that in there if you check out my photo gallery, i think i got a pic of a good one in there.

The unfortunate circumstances that the oil barrons have put us all in is that the local lakes and camps are going to get hit hard this summer because we (I) will not be able to tow very far with out a certified loan from the local bank for diesel. We will make sure the camp is cleaner than when we got there.L

I feel ya fishandfeathers. If everyone would leave there camp cleaner then when they found it we wouldnt have a problem. I dont know where the nickname of the pig came from but if i was a gambling woman i would say from the people who frequently visit it. There is always someone(more then one) camping on the shore in the back which is clearly posted no camping but no one ever inforces it. I hope someone keeps a closer eye on it this summer with all the troops that will be coming. There is a private camp i think belongs to the lds, (not sure)that is all the way back in the back, if you follow the dirt road it runs into a gate which is the private camping. We took horses bac there one day and there is awesome trails to ride on back there, was probably not suppose to be there but hey i’m sick of people taking land and keeping it to themselves when its so beautiful everyone should be able to see it. so some weekends there is alot of traffic but most of them are going back to that campground.

That is church property and has been for a very long time. I am not of the faith but they do keep in spotless and I respect their private property rights and how they keep it. I would say the name came from Porcupine then Porky then PIG. The fishing was amazing when I started fishing it in 74- it is a long shot from those days now. Sure somebody every year will pick up a good brown but they won’t consistently pick up 5 to 10# fish like it used to be, they are sadly gone now. I personally would like to see them cut out all camping. People have proven what they are and even though it would hurt the good decent fisherman that abides by common decency . If you see someone trashing the place let me tell you it won’t do any good to talk to them I know. Go down the canyon and call and report them. I like the area out there so much I moved there.

Yeah, I feel ya. I just bought a new dual fuel vehicle this year though. My new one runs on both regular gasoline and Natural gas. the natural Gas only costs $0.638 per gallon and gets about the same milage. A lot of people in Utah are starting to get/convert dual fuel trucks, etc because the gas is so cheap. We save more money on Gas every month than our new car payment costs us. Maybe look into it…makes long fishing trips a whole lot easier and cheaper! A Bunch of Chevron stations around Utah have natural gas pumps. I primarily just use the ones in Logan, Clearfield and Ogden, though they have them lots of places. If you drive around Utah a lot it’s worth looking into. A lot of times you qualify for a $3,000 tax rebate that you can spread out over 5 years too! Good stuff for us fishermen who like to drive to go fishing a lot.

I called the state park up there today but no answer. Last i heard was 1/3 open water.
