Taming tiger muskie story

Just don’t think the F&G are going to allow Tigers to run up the Logan to the 1st dam, The Blacksmith , the Little Bear etc. No matter if they are sterile of not. I have always thought Cutler had untapped potential but I don’t see that happening.

**I don’t know if my opinion really counts, since I’m not as much an avid fisher as most people on here… I do it just for fun.

I fished Newton last fall (September), and both Saturdays were pretty clear of skiers and boaters just to boat. There was a couple, but they behaved pretty good.

Also, I have to agree about the TMs not fighting much. BigBassholics, who I was with, kept telling me how they jump and roll and all that… bleh! The ones I caught were more like the “wet sock” description. Wipers fight harder than they did. But I also agree that it might be because they’ve gotten so used to it… even if they are very simple/“dumb” animals, they can still learn that when they get caught, they’ll be pulled out of the water and manhandled for a bit, then go back in. Now if they figure out the difference between lure and real fish, then they wouldn’t get caught at all!

Try them when the water is cooler and they’re quite different. Imagine running a laps in a sauna. Kind of the same thing for the musky during warm weather.

I hit Newton last week with my bro and I’m not worried about the number of muskies. However, I do believe they are getting well educated. Can’t believe how many peeps were throwing everything from a-z at them. Having said that, I am concerned that there may be TOO many for the forage base available. Has anyone caught much for crappies/perch/bass up there this year? I’m not sure what the results were from the last gill net sampling the DWR performed but I’d be curious as to how the little guys are doing. There are so many tigers(getting larger also) that they may be putting a hurt on the panfish. If that is the case then it might be wise to lift the C&R mandate or perhaps transplant a few. Just food for thought..

Hmmmm…agree try catch’n them in colder water temps and I do believe you’d change your mind about how they fight. However I will agree Wipers for their size do put up a great fight…but don’t tail walk like muskies do. I’m here to tell you with all the Tigers we’ve boated colder water is the ticket.

Last fall I saw hundreds of small bass in the shallows as well as large schools of perch. It might just be the high water has given the fish more water to spread out and hide in.

ya they dont fight at all

Here’s an early summer muskie on a fly. The video is from last year. We caught two last week, one fought pretty good and the other just muscled around for a bit. We try to net them quickly as to not overplay the fish and less likely to throw the hook. I can’t tell you how many we’ve lost next to the boat cause we were dinking around with the fight instead of just netting them. Hope this video works, if not, it was a good fight with some tail dancin.

Great video. You must use a huge fly.

Can’t resist this one…That’s what she said! Yah, they are tied on 2/0 to 6/0 hooks. Pretty much “chuck and duck” technique!

I gotta admit- The video was pretty cool :sunglasses:
