Taking a kid fishing

Nothing like the experience of taking a kid fishing who has gone once or twice with a Scout troop, but doesn’t really know how, and teaching him the ropes. (Or the lines…or whatever!)

We have some good family friends who have one son left at home, their youngest. Kid loves to fish but no one else in the family really does, so he’s only gone a handful of times in his life. He’s a great kid, but has school, he’s a musician (guitar, mandolin, banjo), an FFA club officer, has a little farm with his FFA and 4H project dairy goats and other animals, studying and interning (he wants to be a vet when he grows up) and just generally has a busy life.

Been hoping to take him fishing but since we’re moving out of state I figured I really needed to make the time to take him. Thursday afternoon we headed up American Fork Canyon to Tibble Fork reservoir, and explained about structure that fish like and where and how to cast a spinning rod. Kid caught a rainbow on a worm under a bobber

I caught nothing! He had to get home so I promised him I’d grab him again Fri afternoon. I went down the creek and caught several smaller rainbows and a brown. Beautifully colored!

So Fri we started in AF creek. With a little bit of coaching, and a little bit of wrapping his line around some bushes, he started getting bites in the creek. Didn’t manage to bring anything in but by the time he left, he wasn’t snagging trees and bushes any more, and he was casting where he wanted to be and working the riffles and pools.

On the way out of the canyon we had to stop and take pix of the breathtaking scenery.

A nice couple of days.
